From the first backpackers arrived in the 70s through the 90s tourist boom Egypt's Aqaba coast developed into a divers'paradise with beach resorts all along the shore. The recent major decline in tourists following the global finacial crisis has left many of them abandoned. Some of them, like Farouza Village, are still in operation, but only as sunkissed shadows of former glory.

Carved Names in the Jardin Majorelle

I visited the Jardin Majorelle in March, 2011 and found an abundance of visitor names carved in bamboos and cactii of the garden. The Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech is the work of the French orientalist painter Jacques Majorelle. Famous for the use of a distinctive blue color, the Jardin Majorelle is today one of the chief tourist sites in Marrakech, attracting thousands of visitors every year. Contrary to the rules, many of these visitors leave a memory of their stay carved in the bark and surfaces of the plants and trees of the garden.
