Day 66 - a view from a window

I had an executive meeting this evening as I am the Treasurer of the Union of National Defence Employees Local 641 and we hold our meetings at the Kingston PSAC office on John Counter.

While waiting for the rest to show up I grabbed my XTi out of my purse and managed to take a couple of shots out the window hoping for "rush hour traffic". Alas, this is not much of a rush hour and the black and white is even less. Although good for those travelling home from work if the traffic was not congested here in Kingston (if you could call our rush hour traffic that).

Processed in Lightroom 4. Reminds me of a tin photo of sorts.

Wolfe Island in winter

On Sunday we traveled to Wolfe Island on the Ferry just stayed on didn't get off. We wanted to see the ice in the daytime that the ferry pushed through traveling along the highway (yes, it is a Highway according to the Ministry of Transportation) from Kingston to Wolfe Island.

It really is a sight to see so if you are looking for a fun one hour jaunt, why not jump on the Wolfe Islander and take a run over to the Island and back. Dress warm, go stand on the upper deck or by the bow and enjoy the view!

Just a sampling of the photos I took today of the 4th Annual Limestone Charity Triathalon in Kingston Ontario Canada.

The triathalon was in support of the Kingston Military Family Resource Centre and is the 4th annual event supported by CFB Kingston.

My hat goes off to all who participated in the event.

no longer used many of the buidlings that were once part of the Kingston Psychiatric Hospital now sit empty. What I wouldn't give to get in and explore these old budlings with a camera.

Perhaps the Ontario Government should take a lesson from our neighbours to the south that opened up Alcatraz as a tourist sight. After all, we are still paying through taxes to keep these buildings heated, have the grounds maintained and have security services ensure that they are not broken into.

The spirit of the Haunted Hospital met them as they dared to enter. She tried to warn them of the horrors that awaited them. They would not listen. They defied her warnings. They entered. They did not come out.

Thanks to those who came out to support our two charities by taking a guided tour of Haunted Hospital we raised over 1,000.00 for a 50 50 split to Soldier On and United Way.

These were our guides as we entered the Haunted Hospital. Death and the Spirit they were called.

As we toured we heard the screams of a poor ghostly patient was screaming and screaming in pain as the sick and twisted medical person who has long left this earth and still haunts the halls in the bowels of the basement of the haunted hosptial to this day (located at 1 Entertien Street CFB Kingston) trys to ampute her arm with a hack saw. (I won't post photos of that you will just have to go see for yourself!!)

All we, as visitors to the scene could do, was just watch in horor as she screamed and begged us to help her.

I dare you...no I double dare you to pay $5.00 to a good cause ( Solider On (a charity near and dear to all of our hearts at the clinic) and United Way) for a quick tour of this chamber of horrors. It runs this evening (October 29th from 6:00 - 9:00 pm). It's not recommended for kids under 10 but there were little ones there and if they are not afraid of Fort Fright type of a venue then by all means take them.

For my Kingston Photo Club buds or Kingston Flickr photo buds you can bring your camera! Just identify yourself as being part of the Kingston photo group so they know as they were not allowing cameras (except the Kingston photo group). I will be there at some point again this evening.

and I kinda like it. Had to take the black level all the way to the extreme to even see it when I imported it...too bad too cause there was some really nice light on this building.

We were out today shooting before we met to discuss our upcoming show in March. Of course I just had to put on my old Canon 18 - 75 lens thinking I would be able to get some good shots with it and take off the tried and true sigma 18 - 250 I have been using all along. I got a few shots off ... some ice ... then the error code started. ARGHHHHH....so this is the result....I kinda like it.

Well we felt like the paparazzi no doubt, about four us all taking photos of this young lady at the Italian Canadian Club in Kingston Ontario within our hour slot with the photo club. It was hard to get a photograph of her from the front (I am tall and with four with tripods it was kind of cramped) so I had to stand off to the side for many of my shots thus having the lighting bounce off her in ways that perhaps it should not if I were in a studio.

I have changed the backdrop in PSE only because I am trying to learn how to use it as well. Got my background from Ezbackgrounds.

Another Yousuf Karsh I won't become overnight let me tell you but, nonetheless, I did have fun taking portraits and photos of glass as well.

The Vigilant 1 en route to Wolfe Island

While I was down at Arrowhead Beach this afternoon, I heard this rumbling, almost like a train going by. Yet, how could that be? The train track is north of the area and this noise was coming south of me. It was the barge and the little Vigilant 1 here plowing through the ice on Lake Ontario. The barge taking over the parts for the wind turbines and following along behind...this little vessel....reminding me of a tiny tug boat that a child would play with in the tub.

The photo was dark as I was playing around using a low ISO and with it getting dark I thought I would just play in PSE and see what I could come up with.

Vigilant 1

My friend here Randy Son of Robert, had asked earlier in another photo of mine if the lake froze over in the winter. The answer is yes. However, part of the lake is considered a Highway and as such has a ferry that connects inhabitants of Wolfe Island (one of the largest of the 1000 Islands) to the mainland of the City of Kingston and as a result, is kept open by the Wolfe Islander III that makes her voyage back and forth (on the half hour).

This little vessel was busy traveling along keeping the water open to the "winter dock" of Wolfe Island so that the vessel carrying the equipment for the wind farm project (the largest in Canada) could go back and forth from Kingston to Wolfe Island.

Kingston City Hall and Shoal Tower

We braved it and decided to take a trip over on the Ferry today with our eldest daughter and her boyfriend. Last night it was much colder trip on the ferry than today and we managed to stand out on the deck for most of the trip over and back.

Kingston City Hall is the main building in the photograph with Shoal Tower, one of the four Martello Towers in Kingston, Ontario, Canada at the right of the photograph.

This photo reminded me of something from an era ago and so I played in picnik. View Large.
