Taken just after the sun dipped below the horizon on a gorgeous night in 2010.

Three exposure blend shot tripod mounted with my Canon 7D and Tokina 11-16. The longest exposure was 10s which gave a nice, misty look to the water.

Every time I look at this photograph I feel like the rock is some creature rising up out of the water, hence the name. The sky that day wasn't what I expected, but I loved the way the water was breaking around this rock, so I got in position and shot it. I actually choose my 17-40L for this shot due to the water spray, and the 17mm focal length worked well.

Shot with my Canon 7D and 17-40 f/4L at f/8 and 1s. Tripod mounted, two exposure blend.

A shot of the Lower Emerald Pool at Zion National Park from my 2011 trip. This was shot from behind one of the waterfalls pouring into the pool. There was plenty of water flowing as it was raining off and on while we hiked the Emerald Pools Trail.

Shot with my Canon 7D and Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 at f/8. Hand held, two exposure blend.

Upper Emerald Pool Waterfall, Zion National Park

This is one of the most peaceful, beautiful, and difficult spots to photograph in Zion National Park. You are basically right up against canyon walls on three sides. Not even 11mm on crop can capture more then a fraction of the scene.

My friends and I had hiked up to this spot a little earlier in the day. We got hit by heavy rain right when we got to the upper emerald pool. With the stormy conditions in Zion the pool was full and covered much of the land where you can normally sit and relax. So we didn't spend long there and I didn't pull out my camera. We left and just below the middle pool the rain stopped. I told my friends I wanted to hike back to the upper pool and get some shots, and would meet them back at camp.

I hiked back and found I was the only person there. I started shooting and it started sprinkling. No problem I thought. Shortly after I took this shot the sprinkle turned into a flash flood. The waterfall became twice as wide, and the wind was blowing more water from the falls onto me than rain. I was completely drenched, but it was worth it.

Manual blend of two exposures made with my Canon 7D and Tokina 11-16 f/2.8, tripod mounted. Processed using ACR/Photoshop CS4.

Sunset at Little Corona Del Mar beach in Newport Beach, CA. The waves were pretty crazy but I setup on a nice rock just tall enough to keep me safe and relatively dry.

The night I shot this there was a pretty big fire in L.A. and smoke was blowing down into Orange County. The smoke gave a very unique color to everything that night.

Single exposure shot with a Canon 10D and 17-40L at 17mm and f/16.

Crescent Bay Storm #2

This was actually the first shot from the sunset in Crescent Bay Storm #1. I anticipated that the sun would break through and turn the sky red so I had moved out further into the water. You can't really tell from the photograph but the waves were pretty intense, and this was shot low. When a wave would come in I would lift my camera and tripod up, wait, then put it back down to finish composing and shooting. I got soaked but I think it was worth it.
