The last few winters in Mid-Wales have been so bad, Barn Owl numbers have fallen by 30%.

This year the Barn Owl has made an amazing come back.

Let`s all hope for a mild winter this year for our Barn Owls.

The GOSHAWK (Top Left) is the silent deadly killer here in Mid-Wales. It hunts by weaving with speed and agility among the trees. Another bird of prey, the RED KITE (Centre Top), was common in the 15th century in the streets of London, they were useful and necessary scavengers, gamekeepers and farmers then began so severe a persecution that by the end of the century the remaining few pairs had retired to the remote hills here in Mid-Wales. The HERRING GULL (Top Right) has a wonderfully strong and graceful flight, often gliding in the teeth of the wind, the plumage is white with a soft grey mantle, black wing tips with white "mirrors". The immature bird pictured is mottled with brown, the white and grey is not completely gained till the fourth or fifth year. SHORT-EARED OWL: Unlike most Owls, they do not frequent woods, but on the contrary appear to avoid trees, preferring the open country of fields, marshes, fens, sand dunes, moorland and hills. They are more active by day than any other british Owl.

GARREG DDU RESERVOIR, ELAN VALLEY.

The water is extracted from the Foel Tower to the Severn Trent Water Works at Frankley Reservoir in Birmingham. It`s cleaned by rapid gravity filter sand beds. Chlorine, fluoride and lime is added to neutralise the water.

The Foel Tower stands 52m above the Frankley Reservoir in Birmingham, over seventy miles away. The gradient of the aquaduct which links them averages 1 in 2,300, which allows the water to flow by gravity alone.

WHERE DID HE COME FROM?: Answers on a postcard to. . . . . . . . . . . .

This is Foel Tower at Garreg Ddu reservoir, up the Elan Valley.

It`s 7-00am on a Sunday morning, I wanted an early morning autumn shot of the reservoir, the problem was, due to the fog and mist, I couldn't see it, and I thought I was alone.
