I recently watched a podcast on photo library management via Lightroom. The presenter stated that if you have more than 30,000 images in your catalog, you have issues. He further stated that if you have a huge amount of images in your catalog, likely, a lot of what you have is crap and needs to be purged. Well, I have known that I have issues, for awhile. I was not aware that my Lightroom catalog was the root of my problems. My catalog, as of today, has 48,572 images on it.

Am I alone in this? What is a normal photo library size? Help!

I know I need to purge my library. It has gotten to the point that when I open lightroom to "be creative" I look at my jumble of files, choke and decide my time would be better served paying bills, doing work, or creatively shooting other people in Battlefield 3 via Xbox. I have a lot of photos that I have taken and then not done anything with (no deletion of obvious trash and no ID of keeper/shots to edit). I shoot a Canon 7D that has a high speed mode like a gattling gun. I shoot with RAW so each file can be 20 meg or so. This adds up to a lot of images that just sit there looking overwhelming and do not get touched.

I am an accountant by trade and tend to be anal by nature. I need structure and methodology to function. I am discovering that to make myself a better photo editor I need to instill some structure and methods into my Lightroom workflow if I am going to crank out anything creative. I recently started to make good use of the "smart collections" feature in Lightroom to streamline my workflow and make it very easy to track down specific photo sets. I am also starting to use the "workflow queue" as demonstrated by Dan Morris at www.danmorris.com/tips-and-tricks/complete-lightroom-work...

Dan suggests specific stages to the workflow that takes advantage of the smart collections and allows to see where your photos are in the editing process. You quickly cull out the trash and identrify what you want to work on, what is an archive item and even what is "personal" vs "professional". Good stuff so far. I am giving the methodology a whirl and will hopefully improve my throughput.

I would love to hear if anyone else is dealing with an unreasonably large photo library (if there is such a thing) and if anyone has any tips/tricks for effectively moving shots from a CF card to a final master file (or a trash bin).

Las Vegas - The Venetian - Main Lobby

While staying at the Palazzo (attached to the Venetian) I decided to get up at 5am local to get some people-free shots of the main lobby of the Venetian. I was using a tripod and I was able to shoot for 10 minutes before security (very politely) asked me to stop.

I was amazed at the number of very well dressed drunk people walking around at 5am. At one point, while shooting, a nice lady in a very fancy dress told me that she thought I was “hot,” as she walked by. While, I am comfortable with my appearance, I have never been accused of looking hot before. I have heard of “beer goggles”. I am pretty sure she had the booze equivalent.
