Yesterday the wife phoned up from work to say that she'd been asked to fetch the girls and bring them into work for a chocolate-eating photoshoot.

They ended up using this one of D1 (so naturally D2 was a bit disappointed that she wasn't in the paper as well, poor thing). The photographer had actually smeared some of the chocolate on her face.

The article is about how Cadbury has responded to consumer feedback and enlarged their family-size chocolate block from 200g to 220g.

This is the third time D1 has been in the newspaper. The first time was when she was just a newborn - she was the first baby our midwife had delivered at her clinic, which the local community paper had considered newsworthy. I forget what the second time was for, but it was also in the Sunday Star Times like this one is.

It's debatable whether a candy love heart counts as food or not, but meh ... I couldn't take the foodie shot I wanted because the weather hasn't been very cooperative this week. Too wet and windy for a picnic.

This week was another "redo" for the Monster High Weekly Photo Challenge, so I chose another black & white portrait, although I decided to do something different this time.

This was just a quick snap I took. I photoshopped her eyes so she could be looking at a slight angle instead of straight ahead.

The title is a play on The Picture of Dorian Gray, although that is not what I was going for in terms of subject matter.

She tried wearing my shoes earlier, but they were far too big for her to be able to walk around in. Her biggest sister's shoes, on the other hand, are just right!

This week's Project 52 challenge was the classic "steel wool on fire" shot. Took me some time to track down some steel wool, and then I had to wait for a dry night. Finally got one tonight.

This was a fun experience for me. My girls certainly enjoyed watching from the window, as well. They kept asking me to do it again.

I think next time I'll try using bigger pieces (and I'll try to find a more interesting setting than my driveway).

By the way, to make the shot a little more interesting, I went and stood amongst the wood the tree cutters rang up for me when they were cutting down the neighbors' tree.

Being a witch, Deirdre hopes to bring a bit of misfortune to some superstitious folk she knows. Between the black cat, the umbrella open indoors, the skeleton in the cage, and the broken glass, she just might succeed.

My wife spotted this awesome tree at Hamilton Zoo. I have no idea what kind of tree it is, I just love how it's changing color in stages. It almost looks like it's on fire.

I'm chuffed that I finally managed to obtain a pair of Jackson's awesome Gloom Beach shades. Totally high fashion, right?

In other news, I've been in a bit of a funk lately. Not sad and miserable, just bored and uninspired. That's why I'm so late with this past week's challenges (and why I'm using this shot for both).

Hopefully it'll pass and I won't need to up my medication or something.

I did enjoy taking and processing this photo, so that's something. Maybe I just need to find my creative spark again.

goodbye pine tree / hello sun and sky

As magnificent as this massive pine tree was, it blocked out all our afternoon light in the winter, which made the house gloomy and damp. I was overjoyed when the neighbors told me a few weeks ago that they'd finally saved up enough to get the thing cut down. I even got some firewood out of it (at the cost of a case of beer for the workers).

They only cut down half the tree at first. They had a lot of other jobs and only just came back today to finish up. Even so, having the northern branches gone made a difference, as the sun was able to shine through into our lounge. Having the whole thing gone is fantastic, though. I didn't realize just how much light it blocked out. Now there's a whole lot more sky and everything is brighter, even when it's overcast.

Pine tree: I will not miss you.

small humans at the zoo

We spotted these small humans at Hamilton Zoo. They appeared to be having a lot of fun playing with some autumn leaves.

It was rather funny because this spot was semi-fenced in, and as some other visitors walked past, I heard one say "Oh look! Baby humans!" Ha.

If you look closely enough, you can tell the little ones are screeching in delight.

D1 is on the left, D2 is in the middle, and D3 is on the right. The girl to the right of D2 is her friend, and the boy is her little brother. The girl used to go to kindy with D2 but her family moved down to Hamilton some time ago. They've been up to visit a few times, so we thought it was time for us to go down and visit them. It was nice to get out of Auckland for a bit.

This week's Project 52 theme was "wide". I spent most of the week trying to think of something that qualified. I even considered driving around town looking for one of those big trucks with a "wide load" sign on it.

Finally it came to me as I lay D3 down for a nap!

Took the girls to Cornwall Park (One Tree Hill) yesterday. They had a lot of fun riding on the little train.

I took a bunch of shots. I think I like this one best because it's an action shot. The others are all sort of posed.

Meet Alice Brr, the granddaughter of Old Man Winter.

In case you're wondering, I did not color her eyes blue. Since her head is translucent, the flashlight was illuminating her eyes from behind as well as from the front, so the blue glow is just from the plastic underneath the white paint.
