On the right kind of evening in the right kind of light, it can feel like you're standing inside a jewel box from this vantage point.

I recommend that you click on the image to view it on a black background. I find that it's easier to see the detail that way.

This was taken from the Cambridge side of the Charles RIver. The water was like glass that night.

Blue Moon Over The Boston Skyline

Last night was the night of the so-called "super moon," so I decided to walk along the Charles River in Cambridge, MA, to see if I might be able to catch the moon moving its way across the Boston skyline. This is one of the results.

To be honest, it didn't look all that different than any other full moon, but boy was it bright!

A little something from the archives.

It has now been raining for two straight days here outside of Boston, and we have received almost 14 inches (35cm) of rain for the month of March, so of course it got me to thinking about my old stomping grounds in Seattle, so I went through my Lightroom library and found this shot of a non-rainy Seattle sunset from a couple of years ago.

Northern Avenue Bridge & Fort Point Channel in Twilight, Boston

The fourth in a series of skyline shots taken on the Boston Harborwalk near Moakley Courthouse.

This one shows the harborwalk along the Fort Point Channel, with the Northern Avenue Bridge spanning it in the distance. Built in 1908 and stretching 636 feet long, the four-span bridge is one of the oldest operable steel truss "swing bridges" in the world, but is now open only to pedestrians.

Rowes Wharf in the Evening, Boston Waterfront

A third in a series of skyline shots taken on the Boston Harborwalk near Moakley Courthouse.

This shows Rowes Wharf -- which is a terminal for MBTA boats, water taxis, and cruise ships -- and the Boston Harbor Hotel's arch over the public plaza along the waterfront.

I liked both the light around the arch as well as the energy that the clouds gave to the evening sky.

Boston Waterfront at Dusk

Another in a series of skyline shots taken on the Boston Harborwalk near Moakley Courthouse.

As I mentioned earlier, the light in the sky was spectacular that evening, and I couldn't take photos fast enough.

I felt like I was taking photos while inside a sparkling jewel box, and my photos here barely begin to capture that feeling.

Taken on the Boston Harborwalk near Moakley Courthouse.

The light was stunning that evening, and I couldn't take photos fast enough. I felt like I was taking photos while inside a jewel box, and my photo here barely begins to capture that feeling.

View it in its large size on my photoblog to get a good view of those sparkling lights.

Taken from the Charles River Esplanade. I liked the reflections in the water and how the slight downhill slope from left to right of the light trails on Storrow Drive throws the lines of the composition slightly off-balance.

Taken from the Charles River Esplanade. That tall modern-looking sliver of a building is the John Hancock Center, and those streams of light right above the water are the headlights of cars on Storrow Drive.

This is Boston's Back Bay area as seen from the Charles River Esplanade. Those red and white light streaks in the foreground are cars on Storrow Drive, and that tall building slicing through the night sky is the John Hancock Center.

This is a shot of the Evelyn Moakley Bridge that spans Fort Point Channel, which separates Boston from South Boston.

I liked the blue lights and the starburst effect of the streetlights caused by the filter I was using on my lens that night.

You can really pick up some of the detail if you view it large.
