On the way back I picked up a hitchhiker. This was 1972, so it wasn't quite as crazy as it seems now. The guy was very scary, with "H-A-T-E" tattooed between his knuckles. He said he was a member of the Galloping Gooses (a motorcycle gang) and I believed him. He insisted on staying with me in my flea-trap apartment for a couple of days until he drank up all the beer in the communal refrigerator. I counted myself lucky that the only real damage that was done was that I had to burn the sheets he'd slept on. I never picked up another hitchhiker.<br /> <br /> Of course, nowadays you don't even see hitchhikers, largely thanks to people like my satanic companion from November 1972. But here this guy was in Inglis, Florida, trying to bum a ride in 2013. At first, I couldn't figure it out, but then I wikipediaed Inglis and found the answer -- there are no satanists in Inglis, so hitchhiking is perfectly safe. <br /> <br /> According to Wikipedia, In November 2001, Mayor Carolyn Risher issued a proclamation banning Satan from Inglis. The proclamation began:<br /> <br /> "Satan, ruler of darkness, giver of evil, destroyer of what is good and just, is not now, nor ever again will be, a part of this town of Inglis."<br /> <br /> It ended:<br /> <br /> "As the mayor of Inglis, duly elected by the citizens of this town, and appointed by God to this position of leadership, I proclaim victory over Satan, freedom for our citizens, and liberty to worship our Creator and Heavenly Father, the God of Israel. Thinking of sharia law, I carefully packed a few little miniatures of bourbon inside my spare shoes, hoping I wouldn't be arrested at the airport. I was braced for a dry period.<br /> <br /> I was quite surprised to find Turkey to have a much more relaxed view of alcohol than, say, Mississippi. The local drink is raki, an anise-flavored liquor that is quite potent at 90-100 proof. It's everywhere, available 24 hours a day at the Turkish convenience stores, and we often saw wholesome looking young marrieds with their kids in tow order a bottle for Mom and Dad with dinner. <br /> <br /> This is no "under the table" shame, as you can see from this t-shirt's caption: "Raki Is The Answer, But I Don't Remember the Question."<br /> <br /> The term "the Islamic world" has no more meaning than "the Christian world."
