Purple Martin (Male and banded). With a length of 7-8 inches, the purple martin is the largest swallow in North America and one of the largest in the world. Despite their colorful name, these birds are not actually purple. Their plumage is a dark blue-black with an iridescent sheen. Depending on the light, they can look blue, purple or even green. Purple martins eat primarily flying insects, and they catch the majority of their prey in midair. They even drink in midair, flying over a pond, lake or stream and scooping water into their bills. Explore Oct 8/07 Only being there to watch the sun sink into the ocean can one really appreciate the varied colors of the sun, clouds, ocean, sand, Diamond Head and assorted buildings etc. The Palm trees are beautiful framed against the skies also. Great Blue Heron. The largest heron in North America. Herons choose a new mate each year. The female lays about three to five eggs, which she sits on at night. The male sits on them during the day. Once the chicks hatch, the parents continue to share duties: mom watches the nest at night and dad takes the day shift. IMG_3242
