Oqaatsut village, Greenland, photographed from the church/school. Oqaatsut is a village of hunters and fishers in Disko Bay, with about twice as many dogs as people. Notice the icebergs, which have wandered over from the Ilulissat icefjord, in the distance.

L at the main crossroads in Ilulissat. We'd just had hotdogs ("pølse med Franske brød") at the "Bar Grillen", and bought lots of Haribo and Faxe Kondi from the Super 1. Haribo; hunted meat and fish; Faxe Kondi (a Sprite/Panda pop drink); and Danish Pastries seem to be the four main food groups in Greenland.

Behind L is the fuel station.

L at the edge of the Inland icecap, and also in it to a depth of about two feet. It's difficult to tell how deep it is. We walked along the ridges where the snow is shallowest and not drifted, and there were plenty of places we were walking two feet deep in snow. But underneath that there was just more snow, just snow better at load-bearing!

Mysterious Night Landing, Kangerlussuaq, Greenland

Long after the airport closed on our final night at Kangerlussuaq, all the lights came on for a special landing from a small plane with a Danish flag tail-decoration. It stayed for refuelling (along with much coming and going), and then left again. The airport was then immediately closed down again. The crown prince of Denmark has been visiting New York, so this could easily have been his flight. Not very clear, I'm afraid, taken through glass during take off.

Didn't get any good photos of whales, though we saw fins and humpbacks.

This one has a gull in it, though (on the right). That's quite exciting for this part of the world, as far as birds go.

We were on a little speedy boat, and we'd stand on the top and shout "whales". The skipper would set us at twenty knots (which can be quite cold at -10C, in open sea), and we'd charge for the whales so that we could see them. The poor things would get a fright and disappear! These aren't conditions ideal for a good photo. We saw a fair few fin whales and a couple of humpbacks which messed about a bit before giving us "the tail" and disappearing.

H8 restaurant, Rodebay, Greenland. Town's population 40 (+100 huskies), nearest population centre 20km (Ilulissat, pop 4000). Quite a place to decide to open a restaurant! Known as H8 from US military's earlier place-name/postcode system for Greenland which was painted on the roof of the restaurant for passing aircraft.

Halibut drying for husky food, Oqaatsut/Rodebuy, Greenland. (Human destined Halibut dries inside). Various huskies lounging outside. There is no real personal residential land division in the village, it seems strange picking your way though people's washing on your way from here to there.

Pretty much all of the village of Oqaatsut (pop 40). Almost everyone lives by hunting/fishing in this village. By the evidence of their shop, this is occasionally supplemented by the pinnacles of western civilization that are Faxe Kondi and Haribo. There is no running water or sewerage, but there is a desalination plant in the village, and electricity powered by a diesel generator. Oqaatsut won the all Greenland football cup a few years ago, despite having a pitch which to me looks more like a crazy golf course. A church doubles as a school.

Where there is no soil, or there's a permafrost, utilities lie above ground. Here is our hotel's electricity and water supply. It wanders down the side of the road, lying on rock, until it disappears behind some gnarly geology. That gives the town a strangely industrial feel, particularly when combined with a pervasive lack of vegetation, and with all the necessaries of industrial life being on public display.

T-33 Wreckage near Kangerlussuaq, Greenland

Wreckage of a Lockhead T-33 on road near Kangerlussuaq airport, Greenland. During a whiteout, three planes crashed in 1968. This is the wreckage of one of them, simply left by the roadside. All pilots ejected and were found safe and well.

D on inland icecap. A thousand miles of snow, and then the arctic. Just walking half a few hundred yards in this stuff gives you renewed respect both for people who live in these conditions, and for explorers and the like.
