Interesting character down at Hout Bay harbour, SA. He pops half a fish into his mouth, leans over precariously and waits for the seals to come and take the fish from his mouth. This seal had a horrible wound around his neck from a piece of fishing line.

Just for fun, some farm photography taken outside Greyton on a recent weekend away. I have dscovered that unlike sheep, who head for the hills when faced with a Nikon, cows are rather curious creatures. This young bull was very friendly and walked step by step closer to the camera.........problem, shooting with a wide angle lens you run the risk of getting cow gob on your lens ! ....

A Cape White Eye, a relatively common South African bird enjoying the nectar of an Erythrina lysistemon which is a species of deciduous tree a.k.a Lucky Bean Tree or Kaffir Boom. The lucky been tree is a very decorative tree but it is also an important component of the ecosystem, providing food and shelter for a variety of birds, animals and insects.
They have been regarded as royal trees, and were planted on the graves of Zulu chiefs.
The flowering of the trees has been, and still is, a good signal to the people that it is time to plant their crops.
The seeds are used as lucky charms......wikipedia

I wish I could say I have been somewhere exotic on safari, like Kruger, Namibia or Botswana and captured this Sprinkbok whilst crawling camouflaged through a thicket of thorn trees, with my 600mm zoom lens.....but the truth is I didn't ! Caught this little portrait on a farm somewhere outside Stanford, through a wire fence [with my cheap and nasty 300mm Nikon zoom ]

A trip to the V&A Waterfront for these little pre-schoolers. The contrasty lighting probably abit distracting but I liked the way thesetwo little guys posed for me in contrast to their friend's deep stare.

Epic winds and waves rage our coast today. I decided to stop bemoaning the bad weather and instead to embrace it by taking some photos down at Kalk Bay Harbour, in the howling wind, something I have always wanted to do ! Have seen many shots of these huge waves breaking over the harbour wall and have always wanted to capture it. Not easy with the wind being onshore and blowing seaspray onto my lens faster than I could focus. Freezing but fun :)

I know nothing about butterflies, so after a quick google search I can add :

Acraea horta or the Garden Acraea is a butterfly of the Nymphalidae family. It is found in South Africa and Zimbabwe.

It has a typical wingspan of 45-50 mm for males and 49-53 mm for females. Adults are on wing year round, but are more common from October to April .....wikipedia

Sorry can never resist a good quote. We spent the long weekend out in Greyton, in the Overberg, SA. Those that know the region will know the rolling green hills of wheat, canola and tapestry farmlands. Seems the yellow canola is mostly harvested and unfortunately this day was grey and windy..... so other than trying to capture "cow" portraits with my wide-angle lens , I tried to use the wind in my favour by blurring the movement of the wheat. These fields were amazing to view from a distance, the wind caused them to look like rolling green oceans. Comments appreciated.

Pin-tailed Whydah male

A colourful and spirited resident of our garden soaking up the last warm rays of the day.

The Pin-tailed Whydah (Vidua macroura) is a small songbird. It is a resident breeding bird in most of Africa south of the Sahara Desert.. It is a brood parasite which lays its eggs in the nests of other birds, especially waxbills. Unlike the Common Cuckoo, it does not destroy the host's eggs. Typically, 2-4 eggs are added to those already present. The nestling whydahs mimic the gape pattern of the fledglings of the host species.
The male Pin-tailed Whydah is territorial, and one male often has several females in his small group. He has an elaborate courtship flight display, which includes hovering over the female to display his tail. The song is given from a high perch, and consists of rapid squeaking and churring. The diet of this species consists of seeds and grain...wikipedia

This is another shot from last weeks lighthouse shoot...Thought I would try a bit of a vintage / monochrome conversion....not sure if it has worked so any constructive criticisms welcome.
Having been a Lightroom user up until now I am trying to get my head around layers and blending modes in PS Elements.
