Pigeon Point Lighthouse December

Having spent the day in Pacifica photographing the surf, I drove south along Hwy One and began to marvel at the clouds forming over the sun over the water. It was not even sunset and already the red cloud formations began to make themselves visible. I pulled into the lighthouse and jumped out to get my gear changed for some landscapes. The cold biting wind had returned with a vengeance and I was unprepared for such a cold burst. I stood out at the point and tried several views and chose this one first. The super wide 10-22 can put so much information at your grasp. I had to pare it back to keep the distortion to a minimum.

Then I tried a vertical shot and it was even better. The sky was fluffy and changing colors fast. For the best color and angle I would get this lens if you shoot Landscapes with a cropped sensor camera. It is so sharp it makes the dirt on my sensor look sharp. It does not like the polarizer though because of the wide angle. Use it with a Cokin style filter but only one at a time or you will see the holder in the shot.

I knew the weather was prime for a great sunset so I drove up the coast for a calm and warm day at the lighthouse. November has been mostly warm and amazing so I gambled for a sunset shot with the lighthouse. The strong sun was really too bright at first so I waited as long as I could to get some color and cloud formations with detail. Once the sun set, the temperatures dropped dramatically and I found myself vastly under dressed. I stayed as long as I could and packed up for the trip back to Santa Cruz. As I drove south and looked out the rearview I was very bummed out to see even greater and more dramatic skys than when I was photographing. Let this be a reminder to all of you landscape fans. Dress warm or bring it with you, be willing to try some filters and stay till darkness or you will miss the best part. Patients is your friend.

When your job consists of waking up at the crack of dawn, there are some benefits. Like the stillness of the water and no people around. When the fog permits me to shoot, I like to snap one of the pool deck on the way to get coffee at the restaurant. I steadied the droid camera phone on the railing and snapped this one carefully. Any movement would have ruined the shot. The steam sometimes shows up in the picture when the 85 degree water and the forty degree air disagree.
This shot was very pixelated so I had to reduce the noise in photoshop. But did little else to it beyond shrinking it and pulling out the detail in the dark areas. Not bad for a crappy phone camera.

I had a phenomenal evening at Natural Bridges State Park the other night. I had taken a nap just prior to the sunset and was a little groggy to say the least. But I somehow managed to get down to the water just in time for one of the best sunsets there I have ever seen. Most of the colors seen here are close to accurate and I did my best not to saturate the already over the top colors. I did some color temperature work to warm it up to the colors i remembered seeing. The wet sand gave me so much reflection and lit the rock nicely.

I dressed for wet feet and cold weather so after the sun set i was very comfy in my warm jacket and gloves. The wide angle 10-22 has been gathering dust for most of the year but I decided to break it out and give it a go. The zoomed in part of the range was almost distortion free and I left it there for most of the shots. My tripod got a little wet and sandy but I did not care. I used the shutter release to fire the shutter and let go when a wave came to close, stranding the camera a few feet from me where I could control what was happening. I worked out fine and my trust grew stronger with each shot. I did not expect the colors I got and made so many pictures, it was hard to leave any out.
2012 Eclipse Full

I chose a windless spot in my backyard to set up the shot. Then I took out my camera and set up the tripod. The camera sat idle while I cleaned off the three Cokin filters I had positioned together on a holder. Then I tried to hand hold the whole thing up to the lens. it was still not enough to keep the shot from blowing out without really under exposing the shot. So I then turned to my other bag of tricks. I had remembered my photo teacher saying you could view the sun using an over exposed piece of developed film up to your eye. After finding such a piece of medium format film that fit my needs, I held it up to the lens and it worked perfectly. The orange color is from the film itself and not the sun. I also used a piece of medium format slide film to simply view the sun with my eye. It worked better than the color negative film for viewing but it was too dark for the camera at the shutter speed I wanted. I was amazed that a worthless piece of film gave me the shot I wanted and not the hundreds of dollars of filters I expected to use.

This is from the pool deck at the Dream Inn in Santa Cruz California. I liked the new invisible glass railing they put in, so I stayed a night and took advantage of the perfect conditions to shoot digital long exposures at the pool. I made so really high ISO shots and got handheld decent shots at f/2.8 . The best were on a tripod with a timer release on the shutter.

The glow of the pool in front of the wharf fully lit through some lounge chairs and umbrellas is pure travel vacation shot. After shooting I went to the wharf for dinner. The water is so great when it is calm.
