Ever since I saw maxxsmart's shot of this little Island in San Pablo Bay, which is one of my favorite shots of his, I have wanted to go see it and make an 'attempt' to photograph it myself.....
I made the drive out there after work yesterday which didn't leave me with a lot of time to scout the area out. But one thing is for sure, it is an amazing place and I look forward to going back when I have more time.

Well this was my attempt to photograph it, and I'm not sure I did it justice, but I had a lot of fun doing it........
Sunset Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe

M. Shaw posted a photo:

Well after the incredible sunset we had the night before, I had really high hopes for an incredible sunrise. We figured Emerald Bay would be a good place to be for sunrise so Vance and I left the cabin at around 5:30am and pretty much got skunked..... Not a cloud in the sky, really choppy water and no color to speak of, so we scouted the area out and decided to give it another try at sunset.
Even though there were no clouds in the sky we decided to break away from the super bowl game around the third quarter to check it out. As we got near to Emerald Bay we noticed how calm the water was and the awesome reflections that were coming from it.

Vance spotted this composition earlier and had said he was pretty sure this is where Stephen Oachs took this shot. By the time we got the camera set up the sun had gone down low enough to give us some nice color reflecting off the water. So we took a few shots and made it back in time to watch the end of the game.....

We arrived in Tahoe City around 3:00 pm on Saturday and as we were loading our stuff into the house we noticed that the sky was beginning to show some real promise for a nice sunset. So by 4:30 Vance and I grabbed our gear and headed for Sand Harbor.
That was my first time being there and I definitely could have used a little more time scouting out a good composition before the show started, but this is where we ended up as I watched in awe this amazing sunset!!!

Rush Hour in San Jose.....

This is Hwy 87 North at the Hwy 280 interchange, taken from the upper level of the Virginia St light-rail platform. After seeing Jave's (JaveFoto) and Richard's (Rich Capture) shot from here, taken about a year ago, I have been wanting to give it a try myself. Like Richard pointed out, this is not a part of town that you want to be walking around alone with expensive camera gear, so I got my brother Charles to go with me.
We got there in plenty of time to get some shots with nice 'blue hour' light in the sky, but as we were getting the tripods set up, some lady wearing a VTA security jacket comes up from behind us and asked us what we were doing there. I thought with the tripods and cameras it was pretty obvious what we were doing, but I said politely, we are taking pictures. Then she asked, Do you have permission from VTA to do that here? I thought since I was on a public overpass I didn't need permission, but I said politely, no. Then she said, ok and walked away, so we continued to set up. But after just a few minutes of taking test shots she came back and told us we had to leave because her supervisor said this is private property and we couldn't do that here. So she stood there and watched us take the cameras off the tripods and fold them up and then headed down to the lower platform. Just as we were getting ready to leave a south bound train pulled up and she got on it, so we decided to go back and get the shots that we came to get.....

This is a blend of two 30 second shots so I could have both the north and the south bound train in one shot......

On Sunday I had made plans to meet up with Vance and Dave to head out towards Santa Cruz for some evening shots along the coast. Since none of us had been there yet, we decided to give Natural Bridges a try. I have seen a lot of great shots from here, and have read the stories that usually go along with them on how challenging this beach can be to shoot because of all the people getting in the way. And of course, when do we decide to go? On an unseasonably warm weekend afternoon!!! We got there at around 3:30 and when we got down to the beach I thought, this goes way beyond challenging, this is going to be impossible.
We decided to stick it out and see what happens. By around 5:00 we noticed the tide had gone out quite bit, but of course as the light started getting good the clouds all disappeared, and there was still a lot of people. We went ahead and set up our tripods in the surf and had to just patiently try and take a shot in between people walking in and out of the frame.

On a side note, I got to try out my new Neos overshoe waterproof boots. They worked really well until a wave rushed in that went well above my knee... Funny thing about waterproof boots, they hold water in just as well as they keep it out!

My buddy Brad, who doesn't 'have' to work for a living anymore, ( said jealously, wishing I was in the same boat), in his 'spare' time likes to look up tide charts. I get a call from him on Tuesday evening and he tells me that there is going to be a minus tide and a full moon rising at sunset and we need to find a place to take advantage of at least one of those events.
Well on Wednesday, after kicking around a few ideas and getting some input from Sean, who was working in SF that day, we headed up to Hawk Hill to see about catching the moonrise over the Golden Gate Bridge.
When Brad , my brother Charles and I got to the upper parking lot, Sean was kind enough to show us a trail just down the road that led us to the edge of a cliff with some incredible views! Thanks Sean.....

On Monday the 3rd I got home late and took a look at one of the webcams in SF and saw that the beacon was still shining bright on the Transamerica building and thought / hoped they were going to leave it on for another week...Wishful thinking!
I made a run to Potrero Hill the next day,Tuesday the 4th, right after work in hopes of catching it with the beacon on, but no such luck, it never came on.
I got this shot about 20 minutes after sunset, I liked how there was still some really nice gold light hitting the buildings...

I have seen some fabulous shots taken from this location from some really great photographers here on flicker, like Terence (exxonvaldez) , Della Huff and Rob (Wiggum 03) and have wanted to get up there and give it a try for myself for a really long time!

I had made some plans to meet up with my friends Brad and Dave to head out to the Davenport area for some sunset shots but the weather wasn't looking too promising, so we made the last minute decision to give this location a try. Even though Brad and I both have spent a lot of time looking at google earth trying to find the easiest rout to this place, we weren't a hundred percent sure where we needed to be. We just worked our way up the mountain through the very narrow streets of Sausalito until we stumbled across a trail that looked like it headed in the direction we needed to go.
So we grabbed our gear and started heading up the trail, and I do mean up!! It was only about a one mile hike, but it was a very constant, steep, slippery uphill hike...And that makes for a lot of huffing and puffing to get my out of shape butt up that hill!! But as soon as we stepped up on to the top of that hill and saw this amazing view, it was all worth it...... The other great thing, the hike back was all down hill....;-)
But as soon as we stepped up on to the top of that hill and saw this amazing view, it was all worth it...... The other great thing, the hike back was all down hill....;-)

Last Wednesday there were a lot of really nice looking clouds blowing through the Bay Area and it looked real promising for an awesome sunset. By the time I got to this location there wasn't a cloud in the sky and there was a very strong cold wind blowing salt spray all over the place!
Just before I packed it up I tucked in by the cliff to get out of the wind as much as possible and took this 4 minute exposure.........

I wish I had some really cool story for this one, like how I had to trek through the wilderness and risk life and limb to get these shots!!
But in reality I watched these Coyotes from the sliding glass door of the cabin we were staying in while I enjoyed a coffee with a shot of brandy and the smell of bacon and eggs cooking for breakfast.
I don't know, maybe it was the smell of breakfast the attracted them, but they were sure fun to watch!
Good Morning Bonsai Rock, Lake Tahoe

M. Shaw posted a photo:

On Monday evening we decided to give Bonsai Rock a try at sunset and that turned out to be yet another huge disappointment!! Since there were no clouds in the sky, there was no light being reflected down on the rocks, which left me with nothing but rock silhouettes against a colorless sky. After stomping around in the water with wadders on for about 2 hours trying different comps I left there with nothing more then cold feet.....
The next morning, even though we new the sun would be coming up behind us and had no idea what kind of color we would get facing that direction, we decided to give it another try at sunrise.
The downside was we had to climb down the hill in the dark. On the upside, there were a lot of clouds blowing in over the mountain range behind us. On the downside, the temp had dropped to about 14 degrees and there was some light snow flurries blowing around with some really strong gusts of wind.
Despite all the ups and downs, when the sun started rising over the top of the clouds that were behind us, for just a couple of minutes we got a little bit of color on the horizon in front of us. As soon as the color was gone I packed it up and climbed my way back to the car as fast as I could!
I think it took a good 10 minutes to get the feeling back in my hands.........
