So what does a young moose calf do when the deer flies are driving him crazy? He seeks out Mom for a reassuring nuzzle. This is the little guy from my previously posted series just after the deer flies had had him hopping about at the end of a sandspit. This little guy, having walked away from his mother and out towards the end of a sandspit, noticed me in my little boat. He then decided to ignore me and investigate a driftwood branch (see image immediately below this). Unfortunately the deer flies homed in and began to bother him to the extent that he began leaping about - if you look closely, you can see one approaching from the rear (third image in the series). The volcanic origins of the island of Mauritius are clearly illustrated in this shot of a whimbrel that had come down to the seashore to search for food. The black, basalt rocks, formed by cooling lava, can be seen all over the island. These birds are migratory in Indian Ocean areas (they breed in the sub-Arctic) and solitary sightings are the norm. I'm a real fan of these noisy, assertive birds. We were in Mauritius and, though a cyclone had missed us, we had some strong winds. This bird decided to take possession of a swaying cactus and the wind be damned!!

This cow moose was relaxed enough to let me get pretty close to her while she was browsing on submerged water weeds. I couldn't resist taking a shot as she "came up for air" with strands of weed wrapped around her snout. She carried on feeding in the small creek as I passed by in my little boat and she was still there when I came back downstream an hour or so later. More at www.colin-pacitti.com.

Having posted a couple of young bull moose, I thought I should balance things up. This young cow was standing on a windswept grassy area at the edge of the lake. You can see just how windy it was by the lifting of her coat and the seeds blowing around her. More at www.colin-pacitti.com.

In Khao Sok, Thailand there is a deep pool in the Sok River, at the base of a towering limestone karst. Just before dusk, you will see long-tailed macaques come down to the pool. Some swim, some drink, some take advantage of ripe fruit crashing down from trees on the cliffs above. These guys took turns grooming one another. This reptile, which disappeared from mainland Mauritius in the late 1800s, has been reintroduced to Ile Aux Aigrettes by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation as part of their Reptile Recovery Programme. "Aigrettes" is a small island off the south east coast, some 800 metres across the sea from the town of Mahebourg. Its significance lies in the fact that non-endemic flora and fauna were removed from the island and it is used by the MWF to reintroduce endemic and often endangered species, first to the island then, subject to suitable habitat being created, to the mainland. I saw this youngster feeding on submerged water weeds from some way off. As I moved my small boat into photographic range, he was startled into jerking his head clear of the water. He carried on feeding after I passed by. Photographed at Wolf Lake, Yukon, Canada. More at www.colin-pacitti.com.
