Pony Truss Bridge

During the late 1800s, various types of steel truss bridges found wide acceptance in Illinois. The Pony Truss, one of the shortest bridges used, was designed to span lengths of 80-85 feet. The total number of truss bridges originally built in Illinois is estimated at 10,000. There are around 350 still in service. This particular Pony Truss bridge was constructed in 1929 on Illinois Rte. 17 over Senachwine Creek, near Sparland in Marshall County. It was dismantled and moved to this rest area on Rte. 40 in 1974.

This joint has been open for decades. I think it was at least 40 years ago I sailed over there with friends. It was pretty rough and ready at that time, and pretty much the only thing on Jost Van Dyke (British Virgin Islands). Foxy himself is still the proprietor.

The atrium of the old post office in Washington, D.C. was modified to be a food court/shopping area. I went there years ago and it was vibrant and fun. This last visit (week or so ago) was disappointing. Few patrons, some empty storefronts, the usual sort of thing you see these days in the modern economy. Having to clear security to go into a public shopping/dining area is a pain, and probably an impediment to success, but apparently the upper floors are still government offices. Those who do HDR will recognize that the ghostly figure at the bottom of the steps is an artifact of the multiple exposures and processing.
