How ironic, to have a biochemical company in charge of a bicycle race!

The Amgen Tour of California 2013 started today’s stage here in Santa Bárbara. Ten minutes of motorcycles and police cars with flashing lights, five seconds of participants, another couple of minutes of support vehicles, and the streets were open for use again. Way more laid back than the Tour de France...

Uploading this image to Flickr before the cyclists even get off their bikes in Avila Beach makes me feel só cutting-edge, in spite of the bad focusing!...;-)

Frederic Remington (1861-1909) knew how to sculpt horses and riders. This Mountain Man (1903) is in the Santa Bárbara Museum of Art, as well as in several other musea.
The entire bronze statue can be seen in this photograph.

The sculpture darkly reflects the rest of the art in SBMA’s exhibition “Myth and Materiality: Latin American Art from the Permanent Collection, 1930-1990”, from which I recently posted a few works.

This painting, Composición (1932), oil on canvas by Joaquín Torres-García (Uruguay, 1879-1949) was chosen for the poster of SBMA’s exhibition “Myth and Materiality: Latin American Art from the Permanent Collection, 1930-1990”, from which I recently posted a couple of works.

I know I posted a similar picture before, but I could not resist adding this one, and if I drop by the museum again before this exhibit closes, I may even take a couple more...;-)

Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830), the most fashionable English portrait painter of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, sure made these children and their dog look life-like. The faces remind me of Rubens (1577-1640), though the boy does look quintessentially English... They are the children of William Samuel Best, second Baron Wynford (1798-1869).

Looks quite acceptable for ISO1600, I think.

This sign seems to indicate that the owners of this British Pub on State Street in Santa Bárbara are picky where the drinkers of their suds are concerned. I guess pointing out to them that an apostrophe is missing from their name would remove all doubt as to my falling in the offending category...;-)

Descending the 241 steps to the Pacific Ocean at the end of Santa Bárbara’s Mesa Lane, one discovers a quiet beach with the option, at low tide, to walk all the way to Arroyo Burro or Shoreline Park.

Judging from the date below the signature, the artist must have been inspired by Valentine’s Day and, of course, by Saint Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians (1 Cor. 13:4-7).

In spite of all the damage done by the “Great Communicator”, some people still think he was the greatest thing since sliced bread. His friend Bob Hope was right when he said, “I guess he was a better actor than we gave him credit for...”

If Ronald Reagan were to return today, he would discover that his party has moved way over to the right, and he might feel more comfortable in the Democratic Party to which he originally belonged.

Funny that the sign on the door of “Young America’s Foundation” asks visitors to go to the left...;-)

3/31/13: I can’t believe it! They removed the left arrow sign!!! Seems like politically correct symbols are pretty important to the extreme right!...;-)

4/3/13: Problem solved: Even though the door to the left looks more impressive as an entrance than this one and is closer to the parking lot, they seem to have moved the entrance to the right. There is now a sign on the left door with an arrow pointing to the right, as one would expect from any self-respecting right-wing indoctrination facility...;-)

“Alco Hydro-Aeroplane Company” was one of the names of the company founded by Allan and Malcolm Loughead, who later changed their name’s spelling to Lockheed, so people would know how to pronounce it. Looks like John Knudsen Northrop changed the spelling of his name, too, unless the Native Sons of the Golden West or Dunbar Studios just got it wrong...

In the early 1960s, Rogelio Polesello (Buenos Aires, 1939- ) began making optical paintings and plexiglass works. Multiplicador (1971) belongs to a series of Plexiglas® panels embedded with concave and convex lenses. In these works, the artist seeks to challenge the notion of the unique art object. Although the lenses are fixed, the work is constantly in flux depending on the position of the viewer and the placement of objects around it.
