A year ago work had just begun on the first floor and by December 2013 this year most of the OUS/OHSU Collaborative Life Sciences Building will be occupied. See notes for more about upcoming changes to this scene. Six vertical exposures stitched together horizontally using Photoshop CS6 File>Photomerge (Auto) and perspective corrected using PS6>Adaptive Wide Angle. NB12623-28

Both towers are now at their full height (the work tables at the tops of the pylons will later be replaced with precast tower caps of about the same height), and first permanent support cables on the west tower have been installed (see first comment below). Every bridge has them; above you can see they tried to fool traffic with a red light, although that didn't work just a couple of days ago they shutdown light rail traffic on the Steel Bridge for the better part of a really nice weather day trying to encourage people to walk across the bridge. So everything zips, runs, or bikes across the bridge quickly hoping to avoid them, not realizing that the accidents their speed causes plays right into their hands… Move thru safely in the TrollZone. After the full moon rise at the Broadway Bridge a layer of clouds obscured the moon for a while, but by the time David Wang who had done the heavy lifting with The Photographer's Ephemeris and I walked down near the Steel Bridge the thicker clouds had moved on revealing this beautiful moonlit sky behind the bridge. Broadway Bridge Centennial • Full Moonrise

Just when I thought I was done photographing the Broadway Bridge Worldwide Pinhole Day and an invite from David Wang who had done the heavy lifting with The Photographer's Ephemeris for the full moonrise I found myself once again photographing the Broadway Bridge.

The thing I enjoy most about pinhole and especially zone plate images are the wonderfully unique diffraction ring flare they offer. This ring flare shows up best when there are a large number of point light sources of nearly the same brightness in the scene, for which the lights of the Broadway Bridge couldn't be more perfect.

With zone plate images the exposures that bring out the flare the best can also hide the surrounding objects so here I combined a pinhole panorama of the bridge taken earlier with a blue hour zone plate image taken the same evening with a second shorter zone plate exposure for the moon. Because the moon is not a point source its diffraction patterns merge into a smooth featureless glow making it stand out from the other more point like light sources in the scene. Just when I thought I was done photographing the Broadway Bridge a recent photo reminded me that Worldwide Pinhole Day was coming up this weekend; and thanks to an invite from David Wang for the full moonrise I found myself once again photographing the Broadway Bridge. One of the things I enjoy most about pinhole and especially zone plate images are the wonderfully unique diffraction ring flare they offer. This ring flare shows up best when there are a large number of point light sources of nearly the same brightness in the scene, for which the lights of the Broadway Bridge couldn't be more perfect.

Digital pinhole / zone plate photography has its challenges though: (1) because of a DSLR mirror box the pinhole cannot be placed close to the sensor and the effective focal length becomes 68mm making wide shots a challenging exercise (2) digital DSLR pinhole and zone plate images except for the flare around bright light sources are very soft in comparison with their film camera counterparts, and (3) because of their small aperture every single piece of dust on your sensor shows up. To get around these challenges I shot a panorama of seven vertical shots with the zone plate body cap and combined it (see first comment below) with a lens corrected fisheye photo of the same scene, and since the fisheye photo was taken at f16 there some nice star flare thrown in to the mix.
