Wired For Desolation

The choir loft had wonderful acoustics and people came from all around to hear the choir's version of the Hallelujah Chorus.

In a quick instant though, the choir loft became a diving board of deathly proportions with the choir director, George, falling to his death on a cold winter day. With his back turned towards the congregation below, George flung up his arms in a conductor- scene closer to the Boston Symphony Orchestra and in doing so, lost his balance from the small step-stool he stood on so people below could visually enjoy his theatrics and fell backwards over the small half wall. The choir members gasped in horror as he landed smack-dab on top of Mrs. Tiddle's overly-decorated flowered hat which was sitting next to her in the back pew. Thankfully, the hat provided a bit of a cushion for George, but not enough to save his life in this mortal world.

Shortly thereafter, chicken wire was placed in the opening of the choir loft so the scene would never be repeated.

And it worked.

Though there have been no further human deaths at the church, I cannot say the same for the church itself. Apparently, the chicken wire only worked half of the time.

My husband and I ventured to Tuscumbia, Missouri in search of abandonment and we were not disappointed. As we exited the parked Element in front of the old Presbyterian Church, this dog came barreling down the steps to greet us. The gentleman who lived in the lean-to at the old bank came out to greet us, as well, and told us that the dog belonged to a lady who lived on top of the hill. The dog was 10 years old. That's 70 in human years, if you're counting.

He was quite the expert in all things Tuscumbia. Here he is beckoning me up the long flights of stairs that lead up to the old courthouse and town square. Above him is my ever-so-faithful-camera-carrier-husband-extraordinaire.

The original slogan in Sycamore is, "Life Offers More in Sycamore."

What it should say now is . . . "Life offers more housing developments in corn fields in Sycamore."

This subdivision is directly across the street from where my grandparents lived. I used to gaze upon the cornfields while growing up. Now the field is a field of homes.
