“Bay Bridge Juried Exhibition”
June 17-July 21, 2013
OPENING RECEPTION
Saturday, June 22, 2013
4:00pm – 7:00pm

2013 is a landmark year for the Bay Bridge with the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the bridge, the near completion of the eastern span, and the amazing installation of the Bay Lights Project by internationally renowned artist Leo Villareal. “The Bay Lights is the world’s largest LED light sculpture, 1.8 miles wide and 500 feet high. Inspired by the Bay Bridge’s 75th Anniversary, its 25,000 white LED lights are individually programmed by artist Leo Villareal to create a never-repeating, dazzling display across the Bay Bridge West Span through 2015.”

In recognition of these significant Bay Area events, 4×5 Gallery will be hosting a Bay Bridge photography exhibition with 14 juried images. Our featured artist will be Lucas Saugen, one of the official photographers for the Bay Lights Project.

"Magnolia x veitchii is a hybrid created in 1907 by Peter Veitch at the Royal Nurseries in England. Its exquisite pink-white chalice-shaped flowers are the result of Veitch's attempt to create a magnolia as beautiful as its parents, hardier, and with an extended blooming season. To create this hybrid, Veitch placed the pollen from a Magnolia denudata (jade lily) onto a flower of Magnolia campbellii (cup and saucer magnolia). The result was the first recorded hybrid of M. campbellii and a tree that embraced the best traits of both its parents. This new hybrid combined the large pink flowers of Magnolia campbellii with the upright tepals and almost pure-white flower of Magnolia denudata. Other desired traits included the upright growth habit of M. campbellii with an earlier and longer bloom season. Magnolia x veitchii flowered as early as seven years from vegetative propagation and seedlings, from the cross, flowered within 10 years (some of which became named cultivars). Magnolia campbellii can take up to 10–12 years from vegetative propagation and up to 20 years to flower from seed. "
The star magnolia (Magnolia stellata) is a shrub-like tree that produces fragrant blossoms that last throughout the spring and into the summer. This tree, best suited to U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 4 through 9, is a member of one of the most ancient flowering plant families and features several characteristics that other flowering trees do not.
This a crop of this shot and as such makes this a 'hyper-stereo' view. The flower was actually closer to the camera than the lens would focus (less than 3ft.), but I trusted that at f22 the details would be there and they seem to be. There was even enough illumination in the center of the flower to see some of the inner details. I shoot this camera more as a novelty than for serious work but the results sure are fun and the slides are quite dazzling at dinner parties ;)
This Magnolia x veitchii is located in the Rhododendron Garden (Bed 71A) in the San Francisco Botanical Gardens
