Promise of the Setting Sun

“When pain brings you down, don't be silly, don't close your eyes and cry, you just might be in the best position to see the sun shine ”
(Alanis Morissette - Canadian and American singer-songwriter, guitarist and actress, b.1974)

A few hours ago the sun was setting in the sky of Saket in Delhi and I took this simple picture with my new camera (Panasonic DMC-FZ200).
From the terrace where I was standing I could listen to the call to adhan (prayer) from the muezzin of a mosque nearby.
The sun couldn’t be more oriental and in some ways it became full of promise for someone who was sharing this moment with me and is expecting some good news in a few hours...

“Light is the only connection we have with the Universe beyond our solar system, and the only connection our ancestors had with anything beyond Earth.
Follow the light and we can journey from the confines of our planet to other worlds that orbit the Sun without ever dreaming of spacecraft.
To look up is to look back in time, because the ancient beams of light are messengers from the Universe's distant past.”

“I have learned that if you must leave a place that you have lived in and loved and where all your yesteryears are buried deep, leave it any way except a slow way, leave it the fastest way you can.
Never turn back and never believe that an hour you remember is a better hour because it is dead.
Passed years seem safe ones, vanquished ones, while the future lives in a cloud, formidable from a distance.”

How does a part of the world leave the world?
How can wetness leave water?

Do not try to put out a fire
by throwing on more fire.
Do not wash a wound with blood.

No matter how fast you run,
your shadow more than keeps up.
Sometimes it's in front.

Only full, overhead sun
diminishes your shadow.

But that shadow has been serving you.
What hurts you blesses you.
Darkness is your candle.
Your boundaries are your quest...”
(Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Balkhī known as Rumi - Persian poet and Sufi mystic, 1207-1273)

"People are often unreasonable and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.
If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway.
If you find happiness, people may be jealous. Be happy anyway.
The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway.
For you see, in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway."
(Mother Teresa, 1910–1997)

I met this lady at Dasaswarneth ghat along the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras).
It was early in the morning after dawn.
She came from far with a group of other ladies in order to worship.
They didn't speak Hindi nor English and I couldn't understand their South Indian language but they were happy and it was contagious.
After bathing in the holy waters they were drying their hair, and spreading some tumeric on the skin.
They allowed me to take a few pictures and we had a great time all together...

"The free soul is rare, but you know it when you see it - basically because you feel good, very good, when you are near or with them."
(From “Tales of Ordinary Madness” by Charles Bukowski)

This man was among a group of homeless people staying nearby Jama Masjid in Old Delhi.
Their faces could easily show that life was not easy for them but they were carrying a kind of grace and deep happiness...
It was nice to spend a moment with them, I was feeling “good...very good”, certainly because like this man they were free souls...
This is a portrait of our carpenter’s apprentice in Varanasi (Benaras) who makes our booths and most of the furnitures of the Red Halo shops and corners.
This young man has gold in his fingers.
He is always smiling and brings out happiness so I can’t blame him for working so early in front of my bedroom windows...;)

"From the mundane to the profound.
You may tell a tale that takes up residence in someone's soul, becomes their blood and self and purpose.
That tale will move them and drive them and who knows what they might do because of it, because of your words.
That is your role, your gift.
Your sister may be able to tell the future, but you can help shape it, boy.
Do not forget that.
There are many kinds of magic after all."
(From “The Night Circus” by Erin Morgenstern)

This is the entrance arch which leads to the Mubarak Mahal (the Auspicious Palace) in the City Palace complex in Jaipur, the capital of the Rajasthan state.
The heart of the Pink City is sheltering many kinds of magic for anyone ready to see them...

"He whom I enclose with my name is weeping in this dungeon.
I am ever busy building this wall all around; and as this wall goes up into
the sky day by day I lose sight of my true being in its dark shadow.

I take pride in this great wall, and I plaster it with dust and sand
lest a least hole should be left in this name;
and for all the care I take I lose sight of my true being."

"Reading is the sole means by which we slip, involuntarily, often helplessly, into another's skin, another's voice, another's soul."
(Joyce Carol Oates - American author, b. 1938)

Anyone walking along the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras) can easily slip into another soul and live an unconscious daydream...
This man was changing his langot after having a bath in the holy waters.
