Greater shearwater (Puffinus gravis) in the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, NL, from a trip with Captain Wayne's Marine Excursions in Bay Bulls, NL.

Shearwaters belong to an order of seabirds called Procellariiformes or tubenoses. Their tubelike nasal passages contribute to their highly developed sense of smell, useful for finding prey on the open ocean.

This kittiwake chick exhibits a condition called isabellism, which results from a dilution of the black pigment melanin. The photo was taken on a trip with Captain Wayne's Marine Excursions in Bay Bulls, NL.

taken during an impromptu visit to Quidi Vidi yesterday afternoon. A bit noisy since it was taken with my iPhone but I liked the colours. The closer, tabular berg had rolled since my last visit; not long after this image was taken it split in two. Just over the right-hand end of the farther berg, a third one is visible on the horizon. There are more watchers just visible on the point, lower down and closer to the berg -- there were at least a hundred people on this little point of land at one time, including a busload of students who arrived shortly after this was taken.
