ID Note by esteemed naturalist Marlin Harms. "That kingbird photo is very amazing. It is very hard to tell what species it is from your photo, but a Western Kingbird would be very early at this date 12 Feb 2011] . (Anything before early March is notable.) Much more common now would be a Cassin's Kingbird, which is very similar, but does have a white malar patch, which may be what we're seeing on your bird just below its eye. "

Andrew Reding says "That is a Cassin's kingbird."

Joyce Cory and I (present) now tend to agree - "chin not all white, white malar patch... "

More expert verification requested of Tom Edell, Brad Schram, and Bill Bouton...

Brad said "Nice action shot! Definitely Cassin's Kingbird--no white outer tail feathers, does have dark face, upper breast, wing coverts, all contrast strongly with white throat. Western would be ash gray, the throat not strongly contrasting. And yes--there are only a handful of winter Western Kingbirds in California history."
Bill Bouton said "I see that you already got your answer before I even read the question. A bit of reinforcement to what Brad said... here's what the tail would look like if it was a Western Kingbird (not my image): <= image sent in private e-mail showing white sides on tail"
