Aircraft on Bathurst Is, 1996

I was lucky to be invited to an opening of something on Bathurst Island, north of Darwin, in April 1996. Unfortunately I can't remember what it was for. The local Tiwi people performed for the occasion. And we flew there on this plane. Does anyone know what sort of plane it is?

Girraween National Park is in the Granite Belt region of south-eastern Queensland. It is a stunning area of granite boulders, especially the Pyramids and is great for bushwalking! It is also known for its wildflowers in Spring. Easter 96

Magnetic termite mounds at Litchfield National Park, Northern Territory.
These termite mounds are built by thousands of termites with a north-south orientation to control the temperature inside the mounds.

Crater Bluff with Tonduron Spire in the background, Warrumbungle National Park in north-western NSW. It is a former volcanic region.
On our drive from Brisbane to here, we stopped at Guyra to visit relatives and it started to snow quite heavily. Luckily it petered out before we got to Armidale for the night. It was a very cold few days camping here at the 'Bungles with our 13 month old son who kept wriggling out of his sleeping bag. Memories ....

Mt Kaputar National Park in north-western New South Wales is a fascinating former volcanic area near Narrabri. The highest mountain in the park is 1510m and I once saw snow up there one September. This is the highest range in NSW north of the Hunter Valley region. Here is some more information:

Bulwer Wrecks, 1994

There are 3 ships at The Bulwer Wrecks that were scuttled on the beach at Bulwer, Moreton Island by Robert Alexander Gow deliberately for a sheltered area to load and unload his 12 m boat in the early 1930's. The main ship was the Kallatina, a steel steamer of 628 tons which was built at Glasgow in 1890 and bought from the State Government by John Burke Ltd. It was scuttled in 1931. The Hopewell was scuttled in 1930, which is the ship on the right when looking at the ocean. At the back running parallel to the beach is the 716 ton Mt Kembla also scuttled in 1930, it was 180 ft long and built in England in 1885 for Mt Kembla Coal and Oil Company.

They were all scuttled to form a breakwater at Bulwer, Moreton Bay, Queensland, although now the wrecks are rusting away and it is a lot shallower between the wrecks, making it an ideal swimming and snorkelling spot.

We did many walks on Moreton Island, the third largest sand island in the world, off the coast from Brisbane, Queensland. This pelican was enjoying the view too.

Mt Barney from Barney View at the end of our wonderful weekend. We walked part-way up Eagles Ridge the day before as a reconnaissance for doing the whole thing (which unfortunately I never got to do). This is not the highest mountain in SE Queensland but is certainly the most dramatic. Mt Superbus on the Main Range is the highest.

We spent a day doing a reconnaissance of Eagle's Ridge, the longest route to the East Peak of Mt Barney, south-east Queensland.
