Sepia. The quetzals love to sit in the canopy of a tree. This day the male was in the dark part of the lauraceae tree (wild avocado) doing his thing with the open sky behind him. It looks like a B&W but does have a bit of green. Taken in Costa Rica, San Gerardo de Dota, at QERC, a field station operated by the Biology Department of Southern Nazarene University, Bethany, Oklahoma.

A male resplendent quetzal a couple of months following the end of breeding season. The long feathers drop off following mating season.

Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno). Taken at San Gerardo de Dota, Costa Rica at the Quetzal Education Research Station operated the the Biology Department of Southern Nazarene University, Bethany Oklahoma. This male is sitting in a wild avocado tree (lauraceae) its favorite food. They are frugiverous swallowing the fruit whole and later regurgitating the large seed. They are in the montane cloud forest between Panama and Southern Mexico. Most of the time when you find them it is raining and they love to perch protected in the canopy of the trees -- not much light.

Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno). This male quetzal is just growing out his long "tail feathers" that will be their maximum length in May or so. He and his mate have been busy making a nest in a tree where they are hollowing out a new nest. Taken at San Gerardo de Dota, Costa Rica at the Quetzal Education Research Station operated by the Biology Department of Southern Nazarene University, Bethany Oklahoma. This female was going through her "early morning" stretching. They had a baby in a nest near by. It was an early morning sun without much light. This male quetzal takes of to get a aguacatillo (wild avocado), returns, checks out the food, chucks it, and flies off. Better luck on the next fruit selected!
