A stroll down to Harrold-Odell Country Park on a still sunny evening a couple of weeks ago - don't seem to have had many of these in 2013!!

I spent couple of days last week up in the Lake District on a Landscape Photography course run by a former work colleague (from a l-o-n-g time back) and his wife www.davebutcher.co.uk/ . We visited various sites in Eskdale and Wasdale - the weather conditions were "various" too. Here at Stanley Ghyll Force in Eskdale on the morning of day 1, the rain was tipping down. Fortunately it didn't stay that way, but we did need umbrellas (see comments shot) for a good while.

A snowy Skiddaw.......

.....in fading light as we headed out of Borrowdale after completing our snowy escapade above Greenup Gill from Stonethwaite.

For anyone interested our route took in Eagle Crag, Sergeant's Crag, High Raise (the high point at 2500 ft/762 m), Ullscarf and Great Crag before we dropped back down into Stonethwaite about 7.5 hrs later. The snow probably added around 1.5hrs to the trek and gave us the perfect reason to pile the calories back on at the Kingfisher fish & chip shop in Keswick (the best we'd had in a long time!!).

Weather/conditions note:
Apart from the depth of the snow, the conditions weren't at all bad & we didn't encounter any ice. Visibility was mostly OK, though it was pretty bleak for a short time on the top of High Raise (see below), and though nothing was melting, the temperature wasn't too low. In fact going "up" was very warm work, and we even sat and ate our sandwiches rather than doing it on the move!

Hvalfjörður

Hvalfjörður is a fjord approx. 30km (19 miles) long on the west coast of Iceland, north of Reykjavik. Since the opening of the Hvalfjörður Tunnel in 1998 traffic using the ring road has by-passed the bulk of it saving ca. 60km on their journey. What they save in time, they miss in beauty and grandeur with the sea on one side and mountains on the other.

We had the perfect day to see the fjord at its best with the afternoon sun giving the it a deep blue colour under a cloudless sky (and temperatures in the upper teens). We had intended to trek up to Iceland's highest waterfall, Glymur, which is accessed from the head of the fjord, but time was against us, so we enjoyed the drive at a leisurely pace as we headed northwards to our overnight stop near Borgarnes.

Sorry if you're wondering why this has appeared as a 'new' shot - I just wasn't happy with the way the fjord was more black than blue!!

Taken this afternoon at work. The site once belonged to the MOD - hence the barbed wire fencing, pretty isn't it?, especially with the electricity cable too - but that's the un-photoshopped reality of life!!

though strictly speaking it is spherical, but it looks round to me when it deigns to appear!

Acccording to Wiki, Öxarárfoss is a 'small waterfall' on the river Öxará in Þingvellir National Park. I suppose that the falls are quite small by icelandic standards (Dettifoss, Gullfoss, Skogafoss etc) but my 5'6"+ daughter in the shot below shows that they are not that small!!
The 'comments' shot was a longer exposure using an ND filter since I wantied to see the effect the longer exposure. I don't like the coloured tinge which resulted, though it does include my (moving!) daughter as already mentioned.

The Great Ouse pretty much at its normal level. This has been a relatively rare occurrence over the past few months with all the rain that we have had. It's very high again now, and it may well be over the road between Harrold and Carlton again tomorrow.

The day this was taken was doubly 'special' since we had a sunset too - and we've seen very few of those this year!! In fact the redness of the reeds and trees on the left hand bank is largely down to the 'sunset glow',

Had a day's walking in the Lake District with our son on Monday.

We drove to Sadgill in Longsleddale and then headed up Grey Crag (Sleddale Fell on the OS map) at 638m (2093ft), some 450m (1500ft) above our start point. The tiny hamlet of Sadgill and our start point at Sadgill bridge can be seen way below (about 300ft of below) along with the little red dot of my son's car.

The positioning of my rucksack is entirely serendipitous - I had to take it off to take the camera out (squally rain/sleet shower as we set off - it's the Lake District after all!). I intended to take a shot from the stlle taking in more of the valley to the left, but the view with stile and wall appealed more - and the sac just happened to be where I left it.

The Great Ouse flowing slowly thorough a world of hoar frost. This view could only be taken from a boat at present since the river is once again in flood and the path along the bank is now under 2-3 feet of water.

The Great Central Railway held a winter gala this weekend (Jan 25-27) with 8 different steam engines running between Loughborough and Leicester.

I indulged in a bit of nostalgia and spent 3 hours or so squelching along some incredibly swampy/snowy/muddy paths between the Swithland reservoir and Quorn as I combined a winter walk with some 'trainspotting'.

I spent some time at this spot since I liked the composition possibilities with the tree and the snow-trodden path leading past the tree to the railway line at the bottom of the dip.
What I didn't bargain for were two trains passing pretty much behind the tree (see below)! Two walkers appeared at the same time but fortunately they stopped far enough away not to block my view of the line, though they are a little too prominent for my liking in this shot.

In the blue 'corner' heading south is Great Western 'King' Class 4-6-0 6023 King Edward II and in the red 'corner' is London Midland 8F 2-8-0 48624.

The disruptive snowfall, about which the weather forecast folk had been warning us with ever-increasing intensity, largely missed us on the Bedfordshire-Northants border and we received little more than an inch over the course of Sunday night & Monday.

However, it was very pretty with the late afternoon sun picking out the lovely church of Easton Maudit,
best seen in Lightbox of course.

Wider angle view in comments below, in some ways i prefer this view but I think that there's a bit too much foreground, especially as most of it was in shadow.
