This is a small volcanic mesa, located right off the south edge of North Table Mountain, right near Coon Canyon.
We decided to name it "Island in the Sky", because that's really what it is.

This was our second visit to this unique landform. I was hoping to get a better picture of it this time, and I did.

We decided to name it "Island in the Sky", because that's really what it is.

I saw this area on Google Earth, and thought it might be nice, so after we hiked of Coon Canyon we decided to hike up here to check it out. I though we would just see some small rocks, but I wasn't expecting this! We were also surprised at how steep it was. We think we could get to it from the other end, so we hike to edge of the rocks to see, but it required a lot of climbing and jumping, and we were running out of daylight, so I'm gonna go back there with some friends later and see if we can get to it.

The sky was a little hazy, so the picture didn't turn out as good as I'd hoped.

I can only imagine how beautiful it must look in the spring, when it's completely covered with wildflowers!

South Table Mountain

Podruznik posted a photo:

This is a spectacular view of South Table Mountain. Located right on the outskirts of Oroville, CA, South Table Mountain is the town's symbol and its most famous landmark.
Both north and south Table Mountain are all that remains of a large volcano, that last erupted thousands of years ago. This ancient plateau is actualy the southern most point of the Cascade Mountains, and the region's volcanic history is still present. Today, there are old lava fields, sheer volcanic cliffs, large basalt canyons, and seasonal waterfalls.
The south slope of the plateau contains a large O, that was placed there by Oroville High School students in 1929. The O does occassionaly change when the rain washes the paint away, or when someone changes it to another letter as a prank, or to honor someone who recently died.
Unlike North Table Mountain, which has sections open to the public, South Table Mountain is entirely private, though people do somehow find their way up there. I heard that the owner will shoot you with a beanbag though, so I'm not risking it, but there is a canyon there that I'd like to check out some day.

This is by far one of the best view of Table Mountain. You can see the entire plateau. This was taken from K&A Quail, on Thompson Flat Road.
