This actually isn't Taylor Pond. Its behind me socked in with fog. This is a beaver-infested swamp on the other side of a man made dam across from Taylor Pond.

Brilliant title, eh? No, I haven't run out of Hawaii photos, but I needed to work on something else for a bit. Just something to reset the eyeballs after looking at nothing but sand and surf..not that I'm complaining. This is a shot of Kaaterskill Falls from my road trip last fall, its a different comp, crop, and reprocess from my older K-Falls shot. I think its an improvement.

I don't care who you are, this is not an easy falls to shoot. The lower portion of the 260 ft. falls is under the shadow of the forest canopy while the upper tier is open to the elements. This results in some extreme dynamic range. I decided to wait until the sun had set behind me, hopefully flattening things out a bit. And while it helped, the dynamic range was still quite high.

What you see above is a manual blend of three exposures: one for the lower tier, one for the upper, and one for the sky. Considering what I saw in my viewfinder when I shot this, I'm pretty happy with the result (although the sky required more manipulation than I care to admit). I definitely would like to return someday an have another go at this place. If anybody has any tips or strategies for tackling scenes like this, I'd love to hear them.

Rainbow Falls, Adirondack State Park, NY

I'm back from a soggy week in the Adirondacks and Vermont. Despite having to deal with broken cameras, heavy fog, and buckets of rain, I think I came away with a few good photos. The color this year was some of the best I've ever seen. Too bad I couldn't see much of it through the fog!

This is Rainbow Falls, about 4 miles up into the Adirondack Mountain Reserve near St. Huberts.

More to come, but first I have six shoots in two days for work, then a trip to Ricketts Glen, oh and I'm moving this weekend too...

Connery Pond, Adirondack State Park, New York

Just returned from my week-long NE photo adventure. The color was variable at best, but I saw & photographed some great sunrises, hiked many miles, meet some great photographers, and crashed my friend Chris' (also a great photographer) getaway with his wife.

Also? I shot about 5hrs of time-lapse video....

Overall, I'd say it was a success. More to come.
