It seems like some of the most stunning views along the roadway in Colorado are in places where you don't dare stop along the roadway. Fortunately, there are exceptions.

I think my mom would have made me blow this one up so she could hang it over the couch in their living room.

A pair of pelicans at Calamus Dam, about 90 miles northwest of us. We stopped here on our way back from the canoe trip last weekend. I didn't bring the long lens with me when we walked down to the beach, I only planned to take a few landscape shots. Darn!

A pickup truck enters Keya Paha County in Nebraska's northern Sandhills.
The Sandhills comprise over 20,000 square miles of Nebraska and most have never been plowed. The grass stabilized sand dunes sit atop the Ogallala Aquifer, the largest underground water body in the USA. Further, the Sandhills are considered the largest wetland ecosystem in the USA.

Somewhere in the Nevada desert...

I think that if I were in good enough condition to bicycle at altitude in the Rockies... I still wouldn't.

Between the steep climbs, the two foot wide path with cars streaming by and the equally steep descents (which look sort of fun, but not when you're taking a corner and can see over the edge a few hundred feet below...)

We dropped off of the Interstate to check out the village of Paxton, Nebraska (population, around 600) ... mainly to check out Ole's Big Game Bar for lunch. It's been a Nebraska legend since the 1930's. For once, we had the time to get off the road and check the place out.

Just as I was getting the camera out of the car, a small flock of Canada Geese were passing through my view of Longs Peak, from the western edge of Longmont, Colorado on an overcast Sunday morning. I took this handheld and "poof", they were gone.
Sometimes you just get lucky!

Badlands territory of Northwestern Kansas near the Nebraska/Colorado borders. A long and wide series of crags, crevices and canyons, formed by loess deposits over thousands of years.

The best photos would probably require climbing through barbed wire fences and treading softly in the buffalo grass where the rattlesnakes sleep...
