drp posted a photo:

Supposedly, matching an image to witty or deeply intimate commentary made me something of a "hot commodity" here in the past. I got a lot of views, a lot of responses, and my work was shared pretty widely over the internet. Folks didn't want to see just a pretty picture, they wanted substance. The experience had to be personal.

I think the way we digest information now has changed, however. Quick. Small bites. Let me scan it and "like it" and pin it and tumble it. It makes me wonder if I need to keep writing. Writing takes time, thought and effort. Posting a shot from an ever-growing library of favorite images is almost immediate. Click. Post. Save. Done.

We'll see.

After all, it's about sharing what we love, what moves us (in visual form) that matters. Does anyone really need to hear about a family crisis, psychological issue, or what I ate on my vacation? That stuff is for Facebook. :-)

Honestly, this takes some consideration. I have a long history with Flickr. I've made many good friends here. And I guess, as with any other platform, if people love and respect you, they'll go with whatever you do. Because it's about you, and your art. Which is what it should be.

Expect a lot more posts from me in the future. I know I keep promising, but I'm going to deliver.

Peace, everyone. And don't forget your mittens.

Don't Fear The Reaper

drp posted a photo:

Yes, I know… I've been very bad about getting back here with any sort of regularity. Gone are the halcyon days from ages ago when I could devote countless hours to my flickering, posting, commenting, faving, etc.

This is a shot indicative of the sort of work I've been completely enjoying lately. I think we all have a certain style to our craft, especially if we've been creating for years, and it tends to emerge whether we're shooting landscapes, macros, or portraits. I always seem to come back to the somewhat dark and detached experience that only NYC can provide. All of the people, the noise, the sights, and the frenetic energy that inhabit the city make each moment a unique opportunity to capture something special. I just love it.

As much as I would relish pulling up stakes and indulging my boyhood fantasy of raising some chickens or monging(?) some cheese in a far-away idyllic farmland paradise, where the air is clear and the women are barefoot, the city keeps beckoning me with it's wicked Gershwin-tinged siren songs. What's a fella to do? I'm sure I could shop online, but sometimes you need to feel the stitching on those Lucky jeans in person. With the Mrs. being a painter, I'm surrounded by art, so it's not like I need a museum, but how can you stay away from the Met? And really now, there's no way to find decent sushi out in the sticks. That's usually been the deal-breaker.

So, here I am and here I'm staying, and hopefully you won't mind me populating your little "recently posted" thumbnails with some of my gritty urban goodness.

Thanks. I didn't think so. :-)

Oh, and for those of you that have asked about my father, thank you again. Yeah, I've pretty much made my peace with the whole situation. He's not really doing much better physically, but there are days when the guy I remember as my "dad" emerges, and it tends to warm the heart a bit. I still believe he literally made the bed that he's sleeping in now, with a lifetime of suffering and being the martyr, but that's his choice, and he made it long ago. Sad to see him not able or willing to pull himself out of the mire. Reality is what it is, I suppose. All I can do is offer care and support for him and my mother when they need it, look ahead and carry on.

And on yet a different note... my site should be up relatively soon, so stay tuned. The work has gotten some recent recognition from a gallery based out of San Fran (that sells internationally), so good things are happening…and with any luck I'll be making a few dollars along the way, too. That would be sweet.

Bye for now. See you soon.
Sparkle

I hope everyone has been doing well. The end of last year, and the beginning of this new one, have seen me quite busy in getting this little photography "hobby" off of the ground. I've been working quite hard with an amazing young web designer to develop a really unique site to feature my shots. It's something that I have struggled with doing for quite some time, but I have that feeling of confidence that now is the right time. It's amazing when you know that the Universe is moving all of the pieces in the proper place to make what you truly dream of doing (and being) sparkle with life. I've also saved enough to upgrade my gear recently, and I promise to post some shots soon using the new baby. Until then, take very good care of yourselves. I think of you all quite often, and I look forward to sharing what comes next.
Pop Goes NY

drp posted a photo:

The wife and I are having some of our work showcased at a local salon (posh!) for an organization called “Artists United,” in support of the Locks of Love charity. This shot (my favorite) is one in a series of six I produced for the exhibit, which has its opening tonight. It's not a processing style that I am usually accustomed to, so it was a challenge to get the screen-printed duotone look of the pieces just right. All of them are based off of my NYC street photography, and turned out to be an interesting blend of gritty and pop-arty. The salon owner did the "Nice, but too dark..." thing a few times as he flipped through the regular samples I brought in, until he came upon this and just said "Ooooooo." So, we'll see. Hopefully, they'll sell and benefit the cause.

What do you think?
Pop Goes NY

[ + ]

As a way of returning the extraordinary generosity and support
you have all shown me in this great community, whenever I upload
a new pic or series of shots this year, I’ll provide a link to another
flickr photographer whose work, personality, or spirit I feel you
should discover.

Visit and introduce yourself. Make a friend. Share the love.
