Ruins of the ancient city of Phaistos on the Greek island of Crete

Phaistos (or Phaestos) is an ancient city on the island of Crete. Phaistos was located in the south-central portion of the island, about 5 km. from the Libyan Sea. It was inhabited from about 4000 BC.

There are many mythological references of Phaistos in ancient Greek literature. Phaistos is first referenced by Homer and the Homeric epics indicate its participation in the Trojan war.

Around the end of the 3rd century BC, Phaestos was destroyed and since then ceased to exist in the history of Crete.

Moúsmoulo (loquat fruit) are part of the gardens of a public area adjacent to the archeological excavations on this hill where the ruins of the ancient city of Phaistos have been discovered. The city dates back over 6000 years and includes a palace from the Minoan era.

These are some of the excavations of what remains of the Palace of Phaistos. First built around 2000 B.C. the palace area was rebuilt twice before being abandoned in 1400 B.C.
