Veterans Day with my Mother

A late tribute for Veterans Day but thought it appropriate in the holiday spirit. The picture was taken in 1954 of my mother greeting veterans off a flight in California. Note: I did not take this shot because I wasn't born yet.

Stewardess requirements in the 1950's were much different than those of today. My mother told us when she was a "stew" the following were mandatory:

Your height and weight had to be proportionate. Must be attractive "just below Hollywood standards" with plenty of poise and personality.

Must be single, not divorced, separated or widowed.

Must be white.

Must be between 21 to 26 years old.

Must be a registered nurse or two years of college.

Must be between 5 feet, 2 inches and 5 feet, 6 inches.

Weight must be under 134 pounds.

The airlines have since changed all of these requirements and no longer discriminate based on race, gender or any of the above.

A picture of my mother with actor Telly Savalas at a celebrity golf tournament in California City, Ca back in 1979. There were many "stars" in this tournament walking the greens, posing for photographs and small talking with fans but I had just gotten off a non stop cross country Greyhound and fell out shortly after this was taken. :)

Sadly to say Telly Savalas passed away from prostate cancer in 1994 and my dear mother died in 2011.

Ronnie Van Zant Park

The Ronnie Van Zant Memorial Park is a public memorial park located in Lake Asbury, Florida. The park was built in memory of Ronnie Van Zant, vocalist of Southern Rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd, who died along with numerous other band members and crew in a 1977 plane crash. The park was funded by fans and family of the band, and features a number of facilities including tennis and basketball courts, fishing ponds, hiking trails and covered picnic areas.

This image taken at the Ronnie Van Zant Park marks the 35th Anniversary of the fatal plane crash on October 20, 1977 of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Band claiming six lives including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and his sister, backup singer Cassie Gaines. --Archives 2007

Thirty one years ago today on Oct. 20, 1977, Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Convair CV-200, crashed in Mississippi, killing six, including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and his sister, backup singer Cassie Gaines.

Billy Powell, the keyboard player for Lynyrd Skynyrd told Rolling Stone magazine "due to earlier engine problems, we had decided the night before that we would definitely get rid of the plane in Baton Rouge, so we started partying to celebrate the last flight on it. In mid flight, the right engine “went dead."

This image consist of two frames; one from the Ronnie Van Zant Memorial Park in Lake Asbury, Florida and the other from the Orange Park Memorial Gardens in Orange Park, Florida where Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines were buried.

The poem engraved on this bench was written by Charlie Daniels and placed at the grave site which was stolen but shortly returned. The grave of Ronnie Van Zant was burglarized and subsequently relocated to an undisclosed site.

This image comes from film archives. On the back of the scanned print I read it was shot using Kodak Tri-X 400 with a Minolta XE-7 camera and a 80mm zoom Rokkor lens. The date was 1977. I converted the BW original to sepia. I actually remember taking this shot and these people. :)
