The Bendlerblock, former head quarter of the German Army, now houses the Gedenkstätte deutscher Widerstand. Statue in remembrance of the shooting in this yard of some participants in the failed attack on Hitler on 20 july 1944. Graf von Stauffenberg, who placed the bomb, was one of them.

Erasmus

Erasmus, the great humanist philosopher, was born in Rotterdam probably in 1469 and died in Basel (Switzerland) in 1536. He left Rotterdam a couple of years after his birth, never to return to his hometown again. But he allways wrote his name as Erasmus Roterodamum (Erasmus from Rotterdam). This statue by the well-known architect Hendrick de Keyser dates from 1622. It is the oldest bronze statue in The Netherlands. Rotterdam takes pride in this philosopher, the University is named after him and the local Public Library has an internationaly renowned collection of his manuscripts and books. Recently a new bridge across the river Maas, disecting the town in two parts, was named after him.
