D9555 Class 14 at Norchard on 24th May 2003

davids pix posted a photo:

Possibly the class 14 was the most pointless class of locomotive ever produced by British Railways as they were built for work which had already largely disappeared and which, in any case, could have been just as easily carried out by other standard classes. D9555 was the last of the batch of 56 locomotives that later became known as class 14. It was completed at Swindon works in October 1965 and was withdrawn in April 1969- three years and six months of "service"! That was bad enough but the majority of the class were withdrawn in the Spring of 1968, April in particular.

I visited Swindon works in April 1965 and the place was full of these locos being constructed. Steam still had a few months left on the Western Region but repair work at Swindon had finished in 1964. I believe the production of this class had more to do with keeping the workforce busy than any actual need on the railway. On a visit to Cardiff Canton depot in September 1966, nine of the class were present but most appeared inactive. The Western Region really struggled to find employment for the class and most were transferred to Hull Dairycoates before withdrawal. Obviously the North Eastern Region could find little work for them to either.

Oddly though, British Railway's folly was beneficial to private industry as many were sold off for further use. No less than 23 of them found use at British Steel's works at Corby and 13 of them were cut up by British Steel: D9503/07/10/12/32/33/38/41/42/44/47/52/54. 18 found use with the National Coal Board (many at Ashington Colliery) and D9555 was one of these, finishing its days at Ashington in 1987.

D955 was privately acquired for preservation and it is fitting that it should have been saved as it was the last locomotive to be constructed at the great Swindon Works of the old GWR. It is seen here at it's new home on the Dean Forest Railway looking very smart. At the time of the photograph it was bright and sunny but a few minutes later that threatening sky above let loose a memorable thunderstorm.

The heyday of the Eurostars at Waterloo Station. This was taken in April 2003 in bright early morning sunshine just before departure on a family outing to EuroDisney, Paris. I think the train I travelled on was the centre one in the picture. This was taken as a quick snapshot without much thought but now these services have all been transferred to St. Pancras this picture almost looks nostalgic!

Warship class number D821 "Greyhound" at Kidderminster on the Severn Valley Railway on 20th September 2003. Built in May 1960 and withdrawn in December 1972, this was one of the last of the class to be withdrawn. The class fell victim to the standardisation of power using diesel electric rather than diesel hydraulic transmission. They were nevertheless fairly successful and clocked up quite high mileages in their short lives. Picture taken using a Kodak easyshare 4mp compact camera.

In front is 47841 "Spirit of Chester" and behind is 56065. 47634 "Holbeck" with broken windows and evidently unused for some time stands ahead of 08628.
