Visitor Center - Star Party at McDonald Observatory

Star Parties at McDonald Observatory are held outside, behind the Visitors Center. Lights are red so as not to interfere with your night vision. There is an amphitheater (right) for the Constellation Tour of the night sky. A dome on the left holds one of larger VC telescopes. You will also see several telescopes along the walkways. Telescopes inside and outside the VC domes are pointed at various objects in the sky and visitors are welcome to set up and look through the eyepiece of any and all of the telescopes onsite at the VC. The background (right) the Hobby-Eberly Telescope is visible atop Mt. Folkes.

Star Party at McDonald Observatory

This is the Visitors Center at McDonald Observatory. Red lights interfere much less with your night vision and allow your eyes to adjust to seeing in the dark. The green line is a laser pointer used in the Constellation Tour of the night sky. Several small telescope domes dot the VC grounds and are used to allow visitors to view various objects in the night sky. There are also smaller telescopes set up around. Amateur astronomers are encouraged to bring their own telescopes and set up as long as they allow others too look through their scopes. In the background of the photo you can see the Hobby-Eberly Telescope sitting atop Mt. Folkes.
