Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Shelton Sturges came to Lake Geneva in 1870. He settled on the land on the Northwest shore of Geneva Bay and called it "Maple Lawn". This was the first summer mansion on the lake. Not too much later, many others followed him. Some historians say he had an influence on bringing the railroad to Lake Geneva in the late 1800's.

The Sturges family founded a number of banks and they were also involved in the grain storage business.

Maple Lawn has had many changes over the years, but it still stands on the original site. In the 1940's the turret was removed and modified to a more Victorian style. In 2009 a new Maple Lawn was built on the site with a very high tech geothermal heating and cooling system. Solar panels were also added to provide electricity.
In 1873 Reverend Joseph Collie bought 10 acres of land on Lake Geneva. Reverend Collie was a pastor at the Congregational Church in Delavan. Rev. Collie, family and some of his associates built cottages for their summer stays. Many of the cottages were completed during the 1880's.

Due to public interest, Rev. Collie opened Camp Collie to everyone. He advertised rooms and boats to rent, milk, ice, excellent water, a laundry, stable for horses, cook stoves and wood.
During these years Rev. Collie continued to buy tracts of land on Geneva Lake, and eventually owned 40 acres of prime lake frontage

John Cooke turned this building from a billiard hall into an estate called "Ara Glen" after a large fire in 1892. In 1890, this property once had a very large hotel on it called Pishcotaqua Park House Hotel. "Piscotaqua" is the Potawatomi Indian word which means "sparkling waters". It had four-stories with many great views of the lake on over 1,600 feet of lakefront property.

For a long time this place was called "Camp Augustanta", today most of the property is part of the Knollwood subdivision.

House in the Woods was built in the winter of 1905 under a P.T. Barnum Circus tent in order for it to be completed by the spring. The home has a unique style of architecture. The center of the home was 100 feet long, U-shaped, and only used in the summer months. There also were two wings that formed three sides of the courtyard facing away from the lake.

The owner Mr. A.C. Bartlett built a heated studio on the home for his son Fredrick Bartlett. Fredrick Bartlett helped design the home and also enjoyed producing artwork. Mr. A.C. Bartlett was a Chairman on a hardware distribution company in Chicago and also Director of the University of Chicago.
Wadsworth Hall was built in 1906 for Norman Harris the founder of Harris Trust and Savings Bank in Chicago. The Georgian style mansion was built on 36 acres of land and is surrounded by landscaping designed by the Olmsted Brothers. The home contains rooms with 20 foot high ceilings and a central room that is 50 feet long. A 12 foot wide staircase leeds to a 20 foot square landing, with many tall windows with views of the gardens and the lake.
Green Gables was built in 1892 and not much remains of the original estate today.
In 1894 a replica of a Norwegian Norse church that was used in the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition was moved here. The Church is now located in the Little Norway Village near Mount Horeb, Wisconsin.

In 1911 William Wrigley Jr. purchased Green Gables and made many improvements. The new design had a four-story open staircase that would end at the top of a tower for viewing of the lake. A new boathouse, guesthouse, and gatehouse were also added.

In 1955 the original Green Gables was torn down and a new Georgian brick home was built.
