Prairie Warbler

This is quite a poor photo, but a very neat bird find for me. This was one of the first birds we saw upon getting out of the car at the prison property. He saw singing right above our heads, the first time I've ever seen this species in the U.S., and only the second time in my whole life.

An Eastern Kingbird at the prison property. In the past two years I haven't seen as many of these birds around, I always used to see them everywhere, now not so often.

The Windsor area is a reliable place for cuckoos, apparently, because my first ones were here last year, both yellow and black billed, and I've seen them here since. This bird I scared off of a nest of tent caterpillars by accident.

I'm posting some photos from a great birding day yesterday down in Windsor, VT. I went to the amazing Windsor Prison Property in the morning, and saw a ton of stuff there, including a towhee and the trademark bird of that site, the blue-winged warbler. Here's a beautiful male yellow warbler (being more co-operative than the blue-wings ever are).
We ended the day with 59 bird species.

Finally!!!
I have been waiting for these to return, and finally I saw my first ones this morning in Union Village! They have to be my favorite warbler, they're so pretty looking and their song is great as well.
Also seen: Baltimore Orioles nest building, lots of Catbirds, and a pair of rose-breasted grosbeaks.

A stunning male Rose-breasted Grosbeak came by the bird feeder! It's been rainy this afternoon, but luckily it wasn't then. A little alter we also heard and saw him singing while perched right on our porch, very close to the house.

Solitary Sandpiper

Along River Road in Lyme, there were about a dozen Solitary Sandpipers around a small pond. They were often bickering among themselves, but occasionally they'd perch for a while of trees.

When we got home from birding today there were three or four of these birds around the house. They pass through on spring migration, but unfortunately don't breed here.

Continuing my series of "female ducks on nest boxes" there was a female Hooded Merganser checking out a different box at Union Village this morning.

At last! This morning I went outside and heard their awesome song over our field. When we got back from our walk this one was singing in the pine tree out front.

There were a pair of Wood Ducks at Union Village today, they seemed interested in this nest box. Also seen was my first Gray Catbird, very fun!

There were several Yellow Warblers at Union Village this afternoon, lots of bird were about after a bit of rain (finally!). FOYs included Chimney Swift, Northern Parula.

These two No Rough-wings clearly liked this perch, they never left it for long, and stayed on it even with us right below.

And, when we got home, there was this guy feeding at the bird feeder. These birds are very pretty, they get a bad rap though.

One of the very first thing spotted after getting out of the car in Rockingham was this Blue-gray Gnatcatcher nest. There weren't any birds there at the moment we saw it, but we did get to see the cute little guys later on. They aren't a species I get farther north.
For some reason the flickr map thinks these were taken in NH, that's incorrect.

Early this morning we headed south for a birding walk at Herrick's Cove, a great site. The morning started off pretty slow, but by later things had picked up. Lots of yellow warblers, several species of swallow.... But the most common birds were the Warbling Vireos. There were always one or two of them within earshot at any time during the day, singing their wonderful "If I sees you I will sieze you and I'll squeeze you 'til you squirt!" song.
For some reason the flickr map thinks these were taken in NH, that's incorrect.
