The preserve is owned by the Nature Conservancy and a hot spot for Spring time wildflowers. Its late summer and autumn beauty is mostly appreciated by a small herd of Columbia black-tailed deer that graze here.
Wet mud in the shallow valleys reflect the blue sky.
Record dry weather has exposed large areas of the ponds at Fernhill. This has provided opportunity for shore birds.

The pink Vista

GeorgeOfTheGorge posted a photo:

Vista House on Crown Point in the Columbia River Gorge, Oregon, is illuminated by the pink sky of a cloud-hidden morning sunrise. Sunrise began at 5:35 am.

This shot from the Women's Forum overlook off the Historic Columbia River Highway was taken at 5:41 am, 7 minutes after astronomical sunrise. It benefits from the soft pink and peach color in the cloud breaks outside of the frame.

Notice how Vista House rhymes the shape of Beacon Rock behind it on the Washington side of the Columbia River. While the Columbia is an obvious line leading to Vista House, there is also a leading S-curve starting in the lower righthand corner with the forested cliff and leading to Vista House and then the vashing point of the Coumbia.

Finally, folding the image on a diagonal along the Columbia reveals a rough symmetry between the Oregon and Washington sides of the Columbia that includes the Vista House and Beacon Rock similarity. Rotating the image upside down also suggests a rough symmetry.

This image was taken during the Oregon State Parks organized photo shoot led by Gary Randall on July 14th, 2012.

Processed entirely in Lightroom 4.1.

WARNING. If you are viewing this full screen on an HD screen (1920 pixels wide or more) you're pixel peeking. This image is only 1920 pixels wide and was uploaded at full resolution.

The image is 7% of a handheld, vr-on D800E (7360 pixel wide image) shot with the new Nikon 80-400mm af-s vrII lens. This amazing lens focused really fast even with the intervening branches. For the past six years, the older 80-400mm af-d vr has been my most used lens. While that lens was sharp, perhaps as sharp in the center as the new af-s lens, it never popped focus as fast as the af-s lens does now. Focus even survived the intervening branches!

I'm definitely not slamming the older lens, Lighter, smaller and sharp with VR, the older af-d 80-400 mm lens is a huge bargain in today's used market. Mine is already gone.

Willamette Valley Ponderosa Pine

GeorgeOfTheGorge posted a photo:

Crossing the Cascade Mountains into the high plains desert, Douglas fir and spruce give way to ponderosa pine. It's easy to think of the ponderosa pine as being only a dry lands eastside tree.

Surprisingly, there is a ponderossa pine that has adapted to the wet climate of the Willimatte Valley, but is in danger of disappearing from the valley.

Fortunately, the Willamette Valley Ponderosa Pine Conservation Association (WVPPCA for short) is active in promoting the planting of the native Willamette Valley ponderosa pine.

These Willamette Valley ponderosa pines are located in Cooper Mountain Nature Park, Beaverton, Oregon where they have been planted as part of the restoration of the park land.

Who do you think won? The California Ground Squirrel is known in the farmlands east of the Cascade Mountain chain of Oregon as the grey digger. East of the Cascades, trees are far and few between, so squirrels have adapted to nesting in the ground. Farmers regard the grey digger as a pest. Ironically, the fox, another farmer's pest, is one of the best controls on the ground squirrel population. This image of a ground squirrel standoff - think Robin Hood vs Little John in Sherwood forest - was captured at Memaloose State Park, Oregon. I don't recall who one, so your guess is right.

A golden-crowned sparrow, zonotrichia atricapilla, feeds in the wild on a forest limb at Viento State Park next to the Columbia River in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, Oregon. The golden-crowned sparrow winters in Oregon, but summers in Canada and Alaska. I spent some time photographing this bird. This image best shows the activity that interested me in the sparrow - feeding on or in the lichen - while still showing the identifying gold crown.

[Explore! May 3, 2012 #368] A pink ornamental towers over the white flowers of the working fruit groves below. Located near Pine Grove in the Hood River Valley, Oregon. Searching for a sunset location about 6 PM, I drove by the cemetary near Pine Grove and noticed the pink blossoms from the road. I walked back and spent 45 minutes photographing the tree, fruit groves and Mt. Hood. Finished, I packed up a 7PM and drove out. When I saw the view from the road again and realized that it was better than the ones I'd been shooting. So I pulled over right there, set up the tripod and photographed another 15 minutes until the light was gone. This was one of the first shots of the second set.
