Steve Wozniak, co-founders of Apple and digital genius, opened TEDx Brussels this year with his first TED talk, full of passion, insights and reflections about education, the evolution of computing, technology and the social revolution. Plus some thoughts about Apple, from the start with his friend Steve Jobs at his garage, up to today and his thought about Apple, among them not being open enough... watch him !

I really enjoyed his talk, his vision about Curiosity and how society, schools, kill it.
His view about technology and innovasion as being supposed to help humans, when it is doing the opposite too often today. And was happy to listening to him and meet him too the night before among speakers, jumping from one topic to another, like number 8... where I found a Curious friendly and open Mind having fun sharing ideas and stories. Merci =)

As I am bagpacking for TEDx Brussels on Monday, I am going into what Steve Jurvetson calls "TEDreveries" =) exploring last year photos and I thought I would share this cool talk by Rob Spence (@Eyeborg) on his Eyeborg =)

"Take a one eyed film maker, an unemployed engineer, and a vision for something that’s never been done before and you have yourself the EyeBorg Project. Rob Spence and Kosta Grammatis are trying to make history by embedding a video camera and a transmitter in a prosthetic eye. That eye is going in Robs eye socket, and will record the world from a perspective that’s never been seen before."

"Canadian filmmaker Rob Spence lost his right eye in a shooting accident, but only recently have he and his collaborators completed a functional prototype of his new prosthesis that is also a camera.

The bionic eye is simply designed, and components are constantly changing. It basically contains a 1.5mm-square, low-res video camera, a small round printed circuit board, video transmitter, and a 3-volt rechargeable Varta microbattery. The components are contained in resealable clear acrylic used in false eyes, but it has two holes for wires to recharge the battery.

Spence can recharge it, he says “via USB off my laptop.” The transmitter is fairly weak, in order to get a clear signal, Spence holds an antenna up to his cheek. He’s already thinking about building a Borg-esque harness for it. Among the other things he enjoys equipping his face with is an earlier version of the prototype that is equipped with a red LED." geekosystem

Fairtrade Electronic est un projet collaboratif, initié par l'ingénieur culturel Morgan Segui. L'idée est de développer du matériel électronique éco-responsable et équitable.
En effet, alors que les équipements électriques et électroniques font partie des outils avec lesquels nous construisons le monde aujourd'hui (et parfois pour des buts éthiques), ces technologies là ont un très fort impact environnemental et social (dégâts écologiques et humains de l'industrie minière, matériaux toxiques, polluants ou non recyclables, etc).
Le projet est donc d'organiser entièrement une filière électronique alternative, avec tous les défis et innovations que cela implique. (Ludo38)

Duncan Irschick is most well known for his work on gecko adhesion, animal locomotion in natural settings, rapid evolution[1] of morphology and function, and sexual selection.[2][3] As an undergraduate, he along with several colleagues, conducted the first test of how much force a gecko toepad could produce. His recorded value of 20 Newtons of force for two front limbs[4] for a Tokay gecko launched a large body of research on bioadhesion and synthetic production of gecko setae, which has captured significant attention in the public eye. Adam & Atau exploit a commonly available consumer electronics device, the Apple iPhone, as an expressive, gestural musical instrument. The device is well known an iconic object of desire in our society of consumption. The iPhone can play music as a commodity, and this is the way most listeners interact with it. Adam & Atau reappropriate the iPhone and its advanced technical capabilities to transform the consumer object into an expressive musical instrument for concert performance. In a duo, with one in each hand, they create a chamber music, 4-hands iPhone. The accelerometers which typically serve as tilt sensors to rotate photos in fact allow high precision capture of the performer’s free space gestures. The multitouch screen, otherwise used for scrolling and pinch-zooming text, becomes a reconfigurable graphic user interface akin to the JazzMutant Lemur, with programmable faders, buttons, and 2D controllers that control synthesis parameters in real time. All this drives open source Pure Data (PD) patches running out of the free RJDJ iPhone app. A single advanced granular synthesis patch becomes the process by which a battery of sounds from the natural world are stretched, frozen, scattered, and restitched. The fact that all system components - sensor input, signal processing and sound synthesis, and audio output, are embodied in a single device make it very different than the typical controller + laptop model for digital music performance. The encapsulation in a self-contained, manipulable object take the iPhone beyond consumer icon to become a powerful, expressive musical instrument.

Evan Roth is an American artist based in Paris who applies a hacker philosophy to an art practice that visualizes transient moments in public space, online and in popular culture.

Roth's work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art NYC and has been exhibited at various institutions, including the Centre Pompidou, the Kunsthalle Wien, the Tate, the Fondation Cartier and the front page of Youtube. In 2012, Roth was awarded the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award. Roth is also co-founder of the Graffiti Research Lab and the Free Art & Technology Lab (F.A.T. Initialement chercheur pour la NASA en Californie puis pour NTT au Japon autour des années 2000, Frédéric Mazzella revient en France et conçoit ce qui deviendra Covoiturage.fr, site leader du covoiturage en France qui compte maintenant 2 Millions de membres (juillet 2012).

Foldit is a multiplayer online game in which players collaborate and compete to create accurate protein structure models. For specific hard problems, Foldit player solutions can in some cases outperform state-of-the-art computational methods. However, very little is known about how collaborative gameplay produces these results and whether Foldit player strategies can be formalized and structured so that they can be used by computers. To determine whether high performing player strategies could be collectively codified, we augmented the Foldit gameplay mechanics with tools for players to encode their folding strategies as “recipes” and to share their recipes with other players, who are able to further modify and redistribute them. Here we describe the rapid social evolution of player-developed folding algorithms that took place in the year following the introduction of these tools. Players developed over 5,400 different recipes, both by creating new algorithms and by modifying and recombining successful recipes developed by other players. The most successful recipes rapidly spread through the Foldit player population, and two of the recipes became particularly dominant. Examination of the algorithms encoded in these two recipes revealed a striking similarity to an unpublished algorithm developed by scientists over the same period. Benchmark calculations show that the new algorithm independently discovered by scientists and by Foldit players outperforms previously published methods. Thus, online scientific game frameworks have the potential not only to solve hard scientific problems, but also to discover and formalize effective new strategies and algorithms.

Ingénieur agronome de l’Université Catholique de Louvain en Belgique, Loïc a travaillé pendant 3 ans pour une société du groupe Altran comme consultant dans l’assurance et la banque. Il a ensuite été ingénieur commercial pour la SGS à Bruxelles avant de se consacrer à la réalisation de l’expédition Hydrotour. Loïc, 38 ans, marié et père de deux enfants, est l’expert qui cherche à rencontrer, interroger et qui mène le plus souvent les entretiens sur le terrain.
