Back again to Highland Water in the New Forest, a little bit further upstream to where I took this picture last year:

www.flickr.com/photos/edmerr/6762487473/in/photostream

Once again, looking for bubbles floating on the water, which, when a longer exposure is used, create interesting patterns on the surface of the river.

Hampton Ridge

A panoramic view looking north from Hampton Ridge in the New Forest, towards Godshill. Nearly half of the New Forest is comprised of heathland, rather than being covered by trees as might be the assumption. This picture, comprised of eight vertically overlapping images, was taken in the north of the forest, where the terrain is more undulating and views like this are, therefore, easier to find.

Pitts Wood Inclosure can be seen towards the horizon (in the centre of the picture) but it was the 'ice cream' shaped Gorse bush nearer to the camera that first caught my attention! I'm guessing that this is the work of the New Forest ponies!

This picture was taken on 8th September 2012.

A Small Skipper butterfly perched on a seed head. After a certain point in the evening, in the right environments and at the correct time of year, it's often possible to find skipper butterflies, like this one, roosting (presumably) on suitably coloured seed heads, dead flowers or similar. They are tricky to spot in the first instance but once found, being typically too cold to move at this point late in the day, provide an ideal photographic subject.

Roydon Woods is a Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust reserve, just to the southeast of Brockenhurst in the New Forest. This is, in my opinion, the best time of year to visit these woods. The display of bluebells here is probably at least as good as anywhere else in the New Forest region. This is a composite image comprised of four separate pictures merged together to form a panoramic view.

Taken at Eyeworth Pond, in the New Forest, on 'that' gatepost! I'm always amazed at the number and range of woodland birds that flock around this car park, feeding from locations where food has been strategically placed, including directly out of hand! This Nuthatch had just missed the last of the crumbs, which had been devoured by a flock of Blue Tits, and is about to take off again. Fortunately for me, I managed to capture the picture a split second beforehand. Definitely more luck than judgement with the timing on this one!

Fortunately for me, I managed to capture the picture a split second beforehand. Definitely more luck than judgement with the timing on this one!

A female Pheasant, taken on a very rainy day at Arundel Wetland Centre.

The weather was horrible and this bird, it would seem, was somewhat fed up by all the rain! Whilst the wildfowl naturally didn't seem to be bothered at all by the conditions, this was one of a group of rather bedraggled looking pheasants, found on one of the paths within the reserve. So unpleasant was the weather that they decided not to move in any way whatsoever as I got to within a metre or so with my camera!

A Grey Seal on Horsey beach, Norfolk.

I'm not local to this area and so it was great to have had the opportunity to get relatively close to seals like this. Definitely the highlight of my visit to this part of the country.

Apparently the seals are here throughout the year, which might explain why they seemed to be relatively unconcerned by all the people who were watching them, many of whom were standing a lot closer than I was!

My visit was before the birth of any pups. I can only imagine that the number of photographers increases dramatically during that period. I just hope that all the attention doesn't have too great an impact?

A warm and sunny mid August afternoon, almost every dead or dying Foxglove flower head along this particular New Forest ride seemed to have a Common Darter dragonfly perched upon it. This particular female seemed to be the most easily approachable of the group.

A Dark Tussock moth on heather. I've seen a couple of these this year on the heaths of the New Forest. Both were really well disguised and, at first, from a distance, it's difficult to work out what they are. It's not that they are particularly well camouflaged in terms of colour but more the way that they wrap themselves around a stem or blade of grass which makes it look as though they are a part of the plant itself.

A Southern Hawker dragonfly. I found this dragonfly lying motionless in the middle of a road. It may have just been too cold to fly but I thought that it might have been hit by a car as there seemed to be a small amount of damage to the end of its abdomen. Either way, much to the frustration of a number of car drivers, I rescued it from the road and carried it in to the nearby woodland. After taking a few pictures, I stayed around for a while to see if it would recover. To some extent it did and after the sun had returned from behind the clouds, it showed some signs of life, flying a very small distance before returning to the ground again. Hopefully it was able to make a full recovery once it had warmed up properly although, having already spent far too long there waiting, I had to move on!

Silver-studded Blue

This is one of my favourite species of butterfly. At least in part this is because of the way they seem to show far more resilience to bad weather than many other species. Whilst many butterflies hide when the weather isn't great, these just cling on to the heather, fully exposed to the wind and rain, ever hopeful that at some point the sun will return!

Following yet another rain shower, this butterfly seemingly hadn't warmed up sufficiently to fly and so was relatively easy to approach and photograph.
