Overhanging Threat

The reflection was flipped 180° and mirrored (Larchmont, New York)—May 5, 2013. The dark “cloud” is actually the result of some mud and other debris stirred up possibly from a turtle that was beneath the shallow water. Some small fish also appear in and around the "cloud" as if they were leaves having been blown off the trees by a gusting wind ahead of an approaching thunderstorm.

A reflection of the New York Botanical Garden’s Enid A. Haupt Conservatory (Bronx, New York)—April 28, 2013. The Victorian-style glasshouse was opened in 1902. It hosts the New York Botanical Garden’s permanent exhibition, along with seasonal flower shows. The photo of the reflection was flipped 180° and mirrored.

This work of art was presented to the United Nations by Pope John Paul II during his visit of October 2, 1979. With Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio having been selected to lead the Roman Catholic Church, this work of art is a good reminder of the ideal of peace that has inspired humanity since the dawn of history. May Pope Francis prove an effective catalyst in furthering humanity’s journey toward peace and tolerance.

A late-season snowstorm blankets Manor Park (Larchmont, New York)—March 8, 2013. The snowstorm brought 9.5” (24.1 cm) to the area. Larger amounts fell in parts of New England where Boston received 13.1” (33.3 cm), Worcester picked up 22.8” (57.9 cm), and the Blue Hill Observatory in near Milton, Massachusetts saw 29.8” (75.7 cm) of snow.

New England Winter Scene

The First Baptist Church of Fairfield after the Blizzard of 2013 (Fairfield, Connecticut)—February 9, 2013. The blizzard dumped 35.0” (91.2 cm) of snow on Fairfield.

The Church was founded in 1751. The building in the photograph was constructed in 1813.

With some imagination, one could easily envision the scene as an illustration from 19th century New England. In that earlier period, a big snowstorm was often an occasion for reminiscing about the past and admiring the beauty of present. The sentiments published in the March 14, 1829 edition of The Farmers’ Cabinet express how many 19th century New Englanders felt in the wake of a major snowfall:

An old fashioned snowstorm is the best thing in our cold country, to bring to recollection olden time, when our fathers brow-beat larger snow drifts, than have rested in our quarter of the globe since honesty and leather aprons were in vogue. It is cheering to see the towering bank in a sunny morning, gemmed like the crown of a monarch, with jewels that receive their splendor from the sun’s rays, and reflect them back to ornament the cold while hillock, which the clouds have bestowed upon us to awaken recollections dear, and sensations as cutting as the winter. It tells you of log fires which cheered them in the wilderness, and the pottage which gave them the very hue of health.
