Twiggy wipes out on a huge wave during the Mavericks Contest February 13, 2010. This is one of the heaviest wipe outs I've seen and it's one of my favorite shots from the day. This captures the life and death power of this place. Scary, amazing and potentially deadly power.

This is a bit blown out but I added it to lend a little perspective. Todd Glaser was shooting from a body board all day. He had a couple close calls but from what I saw, managed to narrowly escape these by slipping over the shoulder just ahead of the lip.

Todd recently won Photo of the Year in the 2009 Surfer Poll for his June 2009 Surfer cover shot. Seeing Todd out there gave me a whole new appreciation for the hard work, dedication and risk involved in getting stellar shots. I spoke with Todd for a bit after the contest and he was very down to earth. All around, he impressed me as a really nice guy.
