These are some of the people who helped bring power back to Lower Manhattan. I came across them in Union Square last night, along with about 30 utility trucks from around the country. They'd driven in from Georgia, Indiana, Ohio, and Washington DC, and were waiting for ConEd to tell them where they were needed. They were brought in under the Mutual Aid arrangements ConEd has with other power companies, but it still feels a little bit like they were coming to our rescue.

South Street Tag Wall

On South Street near Whitehall in Lower Manhattan, Theresa and I came upon a wall damaged by Hurricane Sandy. Stone slabs had fallen off a wall along the sidewalk, revealing tags made over 40 years ago.

Lower Manhattan without power - 8:50pm

Taken from our bedroom in Downtown Brooklyn, looking north towards Manhattan. As far as I can tell, there is no power below ~25th street. Midtown appars to have power.

Wasn't able to capture the sunset yesterday, due to the roof deck being closed on account of the wind. Tonight's wasn't quite as spectacular, but still made a nice photo.

I took the train into Manhattan today planning to spend an hour or so checking out the "Free University" that was taking place in Madison Square Park, and then head to the lab to do some writing. Long story short, I sort of got caught up in the energy of the May Day celebrations, particularly when the main Occupy group came marching down the middle of Fifth Avenue.

(Editorial note: I have to commend the NYPD for how they handled things today. In the past, anyone not on the sidewalk was threatened with arrest. Today, I didn't see any confrontation at all.)

Possibly the stupidest thing I've done to get a shot: Standing on the roof of the tallest building in Brooklyn as a thunderstorm approaches, perched in flip-flops on a slippery, wet table, holding my camera (without a strap) out over the edge of the building.

I think it was worth it.
