Clouds Gather Over the MAC - Save the MAC!!!

Jibby! posted a photo:

I wanted to post something pretty before I take my break, but this prettiness is tinged with sadness. It would seem that the executive director of the MAC, Forrest Rodgers, has been fired less than a year after they hired him.

I met Forrest and had the pleasure of dining with him, his wife and two daughters less than a week before his firing. I was impressed with him, saw that he truly cared about the MAC and wanted it to succeed.

I won't pretend to know the politics that were behind this decision. All I know is that Forrest believed the MAC needed to ween itself off of State funding. They nearly didn't get their money last time, and as budgets grow ever tighter, museums are not a high priority. I'm not sure the past leadership of the MAC has ever considered what's possibly down the line for them. Personally, I can see them losing their state funding altogether, and that may happen in less than a year.

Yet the majority of Spokane and the surrounding areas doesn't even know where the MAC is located, or haven't even heard of the museum. It always amazes me when I mention the MAC to somebody and get a blank stare. So I don't know for sure what Forrest Rodgers was supposed to be doing wrong, but they sure haven't been doing things all that right before him, have they? Otherwise I wouldn't be getting those blank stares. A city should know about its museums, especially one like the MAC.

Now's the time to decide, Spokane. Are we a town or a city? It's time for Spokane to grow up.

I would hate to see the MAC close. It has been a refuge for me for a number of years now, a place where I meet a multitude of different friends. Beyond that, it is a place of education and culture, and an important center of learning for children and adults.

I posted this photo over a week ago and took it down the next morning. Something about it wasn't quite working for me. Ironic, huh? Well, I fixed the photo to my liking but I can't fix the rest. I'll do what I can to help, though, starting with this post.

OK, I need to go away for a little while, so this is my last photographic post before my sabbatical. Got something to do and I have to do it. See you a little later!
MAC 3D

Since 3D is the new fad in films these days, I thought I'd start exploiting the gimmick in my photos. I suppose you could call it pandering to a trend, but I could call you a big chowder head in retaliation. So don't go there.

Tomorrow: Another fabulous pandering experiment in 3D!

Took a short road trip with my friend, John. I was hoping for better weather. Because of the rain there weren't a lot of opportunities to shoot. As you can see, a storm is on its way. Actually, we were kind of in the middle of the storm, but the main fury was still approaching, directly in the center of this panorama.

~Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Sidebar: I had the pleasure of meeting Douglas Adams when I was a book buyer for what was once Spokane's largest independent bookstore. Adams was a hulk of a man, and could probably have crushed me like a bug in his better days. This particular day he was tired, and suffered from terrible back pain, yet he came far out of his way to do a reading and autographing at our store.
I had the opportunity to talk with him at length, and found him to be unaffected by his fame. He was a truly genuine person and a joy to talk with. His death at the young age of 49 diminished the world.

I hadn't planned on writing about Douglas Adams, but while searching for a good quote for this photo, I found the one from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and it made me think of my time with Adams, and seemed appropriate for the photo in a sideways kind of fashion.

Adams was a hulk of a man, and could probably have crushed me like a bug in his better days. This particular day he was tired, and suffered from terrible back pain, yet he came far out of his way to do a reading and autographing at our store.
I figured this was a good companion piece to the auto parts store photo. Both have extremely similar technique, in the camera and in Photoshop; they were both taken within an hour (and a few blocks) of the other. Plus, both are places considered holy by certain segments of our population.

This is one of my favorite shots I've done in a while. I posted it a few weeks back and the next morning it had quite a few views but no comments. I took that as a sign I'd failed in some way. I took it down, played with it a little bit, and present it to you again. If nobody says anything this time I'll just have to be obstinate and leave it up anyway, because I really like it. So there.

Abandoned Schoolhouse, Grass Valley, OR

Jibby! posted a photo:

I believe I've approached the saturation level of my Paradise trip photos. It's all starting to look pretty homogenous to me; crumbling buildings with the same monochrome treatment. So things might be going up and coming down, and maybe going back up.

I'm trying something a little different here, at least for me. I don't do a lot of high key shots. I tend to keep my contrast lower and showcase the tones of my subjects. I like a "rainbow of tones" I guess, in most of my stuff. So I'm trying a bit more contrast here.

Oh, and if anybody can identify the car in the foreground, I'd appreciate it.

As for the homogenous nature of my stream lately, I hope to end that soon with another concept piece. This time I've come up with something I can do at home. Most of my ideas seem to require a model, and I'm usually too lazy to drum somebody up, so I never really get to the project.

Anyway, that'll show up in a couple of weeks, probably, hopefully. I need a change of pace.

Mt. St. Michael "Beleaved"

Jibby! posted a photo:

Another one of my favorite places to photograph. I don't know why I'm drawn to religious structures, since I adhere to no established faith. Obviously the buildings are grand, and make great photographic subjects, but I'm consistently drawn to those places that house a faith. Around here it's mostly Christian, but I'd be shooting mosques if we had them.

I found a lot of beauty in my own study of religion, but not as much in people's practice of religion. So I made my own.

Mind you, I also found a lot of horror in my study of religion, and much of that in its adherents as well. I think that's why I find these places so fascinating. They can be so scary.

But I must say that my own personal experience with the people at Mt. St. Michael has been cordial. They let me wander around and take photos and haven't tried to kill me or anything.

These days, that's sometimes all you can ask.

Of course, in the time it took me to say this, I could have just posted the link, but I remain defiant to the end.

How about that rockin' title, huh?

Oh, uh, this looks a whole lot better large, but I'm too lazy to post a direct link. If you'd be so kind as to look right above this photo, you'll see "All Sizes." Please click on that and look at the largest version. Of course, in the time it took me to say this, I could have just posted the link, but I remain defiant to the end.

Jibby! posted a photo:

Working on the freelance job photos, one of which you see here. So I'll be out of touch a bit while I work on the project. A lot of new people have been commenting lately, and I really want to check out their stuff and return the favor, as well as reconnect with some regular pals. So I'll be back, I promise. Thank you so much for coming by.

In the meantime this is a panorama, assembled from about nine vertical shots. Why not just step back and take a regular wide angle shot, you ask? Well, I did that too, but the drama is heightened even more by the extreme perspective of the pano shots. This way the building juts out of the frame, so to speak. A regular, single-shot, wide angle photo is not nearly as dramatic.

But the fisheye view created here is not what the customer always wants. So I do the standard architectural shots as well. Less dramatic, but the angles are more accurate.

See you soon!
