Made Flickr Explore #53 on April 5th, 2012

This is the second installment of photographs from my recent backpacking trip to Death Valley National Park. My friend and fellow photographer Ian Norman drove us out to Panamint Valley on March 23rd, where we hiked 7 miles to our camp, about one mile from the base of Panamint Dunes.

After reaching our camp site, which lay directly in the 6000 year-old pathway of the ever-shifting dunes, we dropped our packs in exhaustion and began to set up our tent. I couldn't help but snap some photographs of the incredible sunset (which I had desperately wanted to time-lapse, if only we had arrived more quickly). Once relatively settled in, we set our cameras up and started to compose our star-trail shots. We played around with my external flash for a few of them, but mostly let the intervelometers do the work as we ate dinner and relaxed our aching bodies. We set alarms at several intervals throughout the night, so that we could check our progress and set up different shots if we so wished. I woke up early to time-lapse the sunrise from our campsite.

Badwater, Death Valley

This is the fifth and final installment of photographs from my recent backpacking trip to Death Valley National Park. My friend and fellow photographer Ian Norman drove us out to Panamint Valley on March 23rd, where we hiked 7 miles to our camp, about one mile from the base of Panamint Dunes.

The following morning, we woke up about an hour before sunrise in order to pack up our gear and begin the arduous journey back to the car, and then back to Los Angeles. We said our last goodbyes to what had been our temporary home, and set out to cross the valley once again. The walk was much easier this time around; having consumed a large portion of our food and drank the majority of our water, our packs were significantly lighter. Within a few hours we were back in the car, and not more than 20 minutes after that, we found ourselves suddenly bombarded with the trappings of civilization. Tourists, air conditioning, restaurants, gift shops, and RVs. It was quite a shock to have felt so alone and isolated from everything for three days, when in reality the civilized (rather, uncivilized) world was just an arm's reach away. We stopped for burgers at a restaurant, and then went on to check out Badwater; an immense salt flat, which marks North America's lowest point at 282ft below sea level. We also stopped at a small indian coffee joint, pulled over to shoot a dust storm, and witnessed an impressive rain storm and subsequent sunset as we approached LA.

All in all, it was an incredible trip, and I hope to go back soon!

Death Valley - Part IV

CodySLR posted a photo:

This is the fourth installment of photographs from my recent backpacking trip to Death Valley National Park. My friend and fellow photographer Ian Norman drove us out to Panamint Valley on March 23rd, where we hiked 7 miles to our camp, about one mile from the base of Panamint Dunes.

As the day wore on, what had started as a light southern breeze gradually matured into a strong, gusty wind, which demonstrated for us it's power to push the dunes, grain by grain, ever closer to the mountains. The sand moved with ferocity and grace as it spilled into the sky, becoming a passenger on the winds. It was surely a sight to behold; the sands whipping around, erasing our footprints, restoring the elegant lines and sharpening the razor-thin peaks. As beautiful as it was to witness, this sand storm quickly became an unpleasant occurrence. Sand was raining down upon us in a never-ending torrent, and attacking our exposed skin as we fought back to camp. I stuffed my camera underneath my shirt, hopelessly hoping to avoid a difficult clean-up. When we finally reached camp, glad to see our tent had survived the winds, we were met with another difficultly. The wind had been so strong that it blew the sand out from under the supports, and into the tent itself. Everything was covered. Pillows, sleeping bags, mats, etc. We took refuge in our tent until sundown, though the sand found it's way in, and the sound prevented us from resting.

P.S. This photo was inspired by a very talented photographer friend of mine, Daniel Seung Lee.
Death Valley - Part III

CodySLR posted a photo:

This is the third installment of photographs from my recent backpacking trip to Death Valley National Park. My friend and fellow photographer Ian Norman drove us out to Panamint Valley on March 23rd, where we hiked 7 miles to our camp, about one mile from the base of Panamint Dunes.

The next morning, after shooting a few timelapses and eating breakfast (a very hearty PB&J on bagels), Ian and I secured our tent, gathered our gear and set out toward the dunes. The dunes lay somewhere around a mile and a half North of our camp, which was nothing compared to the previous day's desert trek. We came across a few other campers on our way up, which was a little surprising considering how remote our location felt. I was very intrigued by patterns in the untouched sand, which seemed to have many beautiful and artistic variations. The dunes also provided us with many unique views of the Panamint Valley as we ascended each peak. We stopped for lunch atop one of the highest dunes, where some other backpackers were sunbathing nearby.
