What felt like the only means of escape for the extremely long 3 hours we were there. For it's occasional charm, Holyhead really did feel like a terminal town - so much so that the night after I visited I had a fantastically tense nightmare about not being able to escape it.

Guard Van

It was hard to tell which tracks were abandoned and which weren't - but it was very easy to sneak off the platform onto the tracks - don't try that at home - to look at the deserted rolling stock. I couldn't even begin to guess how long the van had been sitting there; but in much in the same way that the Mary Rose was sprayed for years to stop it falling apart, I think Holyhead's sea air was helping preserve (yet also destroy) this guard van.

The best photo I'll ever take, probably. Lucked out completely - no post processing used here.

I snuck off of the deserted platform 1- I assumed it was deserted, anyway, little did I know that the big Virgin trains actually stopped at that platform - and walked about 200ft (from just around the corner in the photo) to explore the various railway wrecks. As someone who's not used to sea air or sounds, plodding around these cold tracks in near total, still, silence was rather surreal. It was one of those nice, cold sunsets that just goes and then you're in darkness, the whole area would be a great location for the right kind of film.

I assume this used to be an old shunting yard since there were 5 or 6 lines and they were all empty; I think one went up to the Ferryport, so maybe freight trains stop there from time to time.

Outside the station.

The station and surrounding metalwork is very modern and rather nice; a similar facelift to the whole area would do wonders - Holyhead does have some beautiful historical areas, but also a lot of decay.
