In the late Middle ages Bryggen (the waterfront) at Bergen became a thriving center of international trade. The characteristic parallel rows of wooden buildings, with their seaward-facing gables represent a building tradition dating back almost 900 years. The old wooden buildings along the harbor front in Bergen were placed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1980.

Notre-Dame was the first Gothic Revival style church to be built in Canada. This Gothic Revival architecture is among the most dramatic in the world; its interior is grand and colourful, its ceiling is coloured deep blue and decorated with golden stars. The Basilica is also filled with hundreds of intricate wooden carvings and several religious statues. Unusual for a church, the stained glass windows along the walls of the sanctuary do not depict biblical scenes, but rather scenes from the religious history of Montreal.
