White Peacock on Wildflowers

The White Peacock butterfly is a tropical native, so it lives in Florida year round while other butterflies leave in late fall to winter somewhere else. The male is very territorial and chases other males away from his home and female friends. In the dry season (winter) it is larger and paler; in the wet season (summer) it is smaller and darker. Seen in Explore, photo #312 on November 8, 2009.

Colorful 1884 Facade

The second story of an 1884 building in the downtown historical district of Faribault, Minnesota. The restoration is complete on the outside but people were still working on the interior. So instead of glass in the windows, they put up blue tarp, which I think added to the colorful design.

This giant sculpture is suspended from the ceiling of the Washington Convention Center, DC. It's part of the series called Five Easy Pieces by artist Donald Lipski, who used every day objects to great his geometric shapes.

The pedestrian bridge across a stream in Lowry Park, Minneapolis. It takes you from the park trails downtown, over the interstate highway, and to the sculpture garden.

Art Deco Light

The art deco style Foshay Tower, built in 1929, remains one of the tallest concrete skyscrapers to this day, second only in height to the Empire State Building in New York City. It's in downtown Minneapolis and stands out among all the modern glass and steel skyscrapers around it. The exterior is faced with Indiana limestone, while the interior features African Mahogany, Italian marble, terrazzo, gold-plated doorknobs, a silver and gold plated ceiling, ornamental bronze, hand wrought iron, and intricate ceiling lights.

The large fountain in the garden of our library has been broken all summer. It's now filled with algae and other water plants. I like it this way.

Casey Key Beach, Florida where the long-stemmed sea oats grow on the dunes. Tropical Storm Bonnie had left the area, leaving behind an awesome sky.

A flickr member commented that this was a Peony. Thanks, because I don't know what kind of flower this is -- it was growing in Toronto, Canada in May. They are native to Asia, southern Europe and western North America. It is the state flower of Indiana.

A silo had fallen to the ground at the abandoned Marmora Mines, Ontario. The rust patterns were amazing. Why would they need a silo at an iron ore mine?

Art Deco Court House

The original 1874 Rice County Court House, Minnesota, was destroyed by fire and it was replaced by an Art Deco style structure, built by Maurice Schmacher of Minneapolis. Metal grillwork accentuates the windows, It also decorates the doorway. Natural-face Faribault stone was horizontally banded at intervals with sawed-faced stone.

This wildflower is considered a weed by many people. They grow in prairies, fields, open woods, river bottoms, and waste places. Flower color ranges from pink to purple and they bloom from July to October. The leaves have thorns and needles.
