The only royal residence that still retains its medieval layout, the Château de Vincennes, is one of France’s most prestigious historic monuments. Considered the “Versailles of East Paris”, Vincennes is imposing, with its 50-metre-high keep, the tallest in Europe.

This fortress at the gates of Paris has, for more than fifteen years, been undergoing restoration work on an exceptional scale. This huge restoration reveals to the public an eight-hundred-year story that will spark off the imaginations of everyone.

Work on a building of this size required historic, geological and archaeological studies. For Jean Chapelot, director of research at the CNRS, a specialist in the Middle Ages and expert on the Château de Vincennes, who has been directing the archaeological work since 1991, “Only one other building has a comparable history: the Louvre. Vincennes is the translation in stone of the birth of the modern State. Its restoration involved major underground work and, in particular, significant excavations along the route of a subterranean gallery inside the château, in the drainage ditch of the latrines and in the courtyard of the keep”.

For the restoration and all the interior and exterior work, the State has spent about 40 million euros on the château since 1990, including a little over 35 millions euros in investment.

After strengthening the central pillar of the keep, the exterior elevations, interior spaces and courtyard were restored. The aim is to conserve the traces of successive periods of occupation of the keep since the 14th century as far as possible. A successful operation.

As soon as you climb up inside the keep, which made Vincennes a true fortress, you get a sense of what the atmosphere must have been like: the apartments are intimate, with offices, a council room on the first floor, the king’s bedchamber with its large fireplace on the second. Some oil-painted motifs on the ribs of the vaulted ceilings and wood panelling survive, as well as exquisitely finely carved capitals and authentic multicoloured decoration. The taste for the functional and attractive is clearly revealed.
