Super Bulldog Weekend 2013

This is Dudy Noble Field on the Campus of Mississippi State University. This photo was taken on Thursday night (April 18, 2013), which was the first night of Super Bulldog Weekend. MSU was hosting Auburn University. Not long after this was taken, a lightning storm moved in and the game was concluded the following night (see the previous photo in my photostream). MSU won the game 6-3 when it was finished on Friday night, and won the series 2-1.

Attendance on this night was 7974. For the third game on Saturday, the paid crowd was 14,563. This is the second largest crowd to ever watch an on-campus college baseball game. MSU has now hosted all of the top 10 attended on-campus college baseball games in history, and 16 of the top 25.

You could feel the electricity in the air last night at Dudy Noble Field at the Mississippi State University Bulldogs played the Auburn Tigers in game one of Super Bulldog Weekend 2013. This was taken shortly after the game was suspended due to lightning.

Comet Pan-STARRS

Comet Pan-STARRS appeared just above the Western horizon for a few minutes right after sunset tonight (March 12, 2013). This photo was taken in Starkville, Mississippi, USA.

It's not my finest work, but the comet was quite dim, I had a LOT of light pollution to deal with, and it was only really visible for about 5 minutes before it passed behind a tree.

This was taken with a Canon EOS 60D with an EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens and EF 1.4x II extender. (896mm equivalent, including the 60D's crop factor). This is a 100% crop.

The Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. There is a large reflecting pool in front of the temple that makes for a wonderful view. This is a two photo panorama. I was determined to get a night version of this shot, so I hiked over a mile round trip to take this at 2 o'clock in the morning the night before I flew home.

This is a montage Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field on the campus of Mississippi State University taken during the second half of a football game between MSU and the University of Tennessee. This was taken on October 13, 2012. Five years to the day earlier (October 13, 2007), I created the montage below from exactly the same seat as the same two teams faced each other. Things have changed a bit. The jumbotron on the southern end has been built since then. The north scoreboard was torn down a couple of weeks ago and the American flag was moved from the northeast end of the stadium to the southwest end. If you look closely, you can see heavy equipment behind the bleachers in the north end zone. By this time next year, construction work to enclose the north end zone will be well underway. One day, this will be a really unusual view of the stadium, there will only be 3-4 home games where it looks like this.

Mississippi State won this game 41-31 to improve its record to 6-0 and a #15 ranking in the AP Top 15 poll.

This is a 21 photo montage taken with my PowerShot S5 IS (SLR's aren't allowed in the stadium).

MSU broadcasting legend Jack Cristil always closed his broadcast after a win with the phrase "Wrap this one in marron and white".

I'd heard the news reports of the drought, and I'd listened almost in disbelief that barge travel had been stopped on parts of the Mississippi River. I believe it now. There were close to a dozen north-bound barges sitting with their noses pointing to the shore near here, while this
barge proceeded southward. I wonder if maybe they were only allowing one-way traffic.

This was taken just a few miles southwest of Yazoo City, Mississippi.

The map location is my best guess of position.

We were a little nervous when we saw the storm approaching. There isn't a lot of shelter on Ship Island (basically this fort and one pavilion), and the lightning was pretty frequent. Fortunately, it all past to our west.

Fort Massachusetts stands on the north coast of West Ship Island, which is one of the barrier islands along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It is now part of the Gulf Islands national Seashore.

Venus Transit

For those who have been living under a rock, that little dot on the upper right of the sun is Venus. The next time Venus will pass directly between the earth and the Sun will be in 105 years. The clouds were actually a blessing, allowing me to take these photos without any filters whatsoever. (I did use Live View to focus through the LCD rather than looking through the optical viewfinder.)

It's not often that you take a photo and realize that this is the only opportunity you'll have in your lifetime to shoot that subject.
