Making her first move today under her own steam out of the North yard at Williton on the West Somerset Railway and onto the running line is ex-GWR Modified Hall class, 6960, Raveningham Hall.

I'm miles behind on uploading photos at the moment. I'm off on a steam charter again tomorrow and I haven't managed to upload photos from my recent visit to Bodmin, never mind the two and a half weeks trampling around the lake district. Anyway, a section of the track between Boscarne & Bodmin General was carpeted in forget-me-nots during the last Bodmin gala. Small prairie, 5552 & 5700 class pannier tank 4612 provide the motive power.

Whisky Trail Crossing between Bishops Lydeard and Watersmeet Bridge is a popular spot for lineside photography on the West Somerset Railway, and not having paid it a visit for a little while, I decided to renew my acquaintance with it for a shot of Ex-GWR Modified Hall Class, 6960, Raveningham Hall as she set off towards Minehead. I was horrified to find that the field on the far side of the track which on previous visits had contained a few horses and made a nice backdrop, was now absolutely stuffed with solar panels. A swift reappraisal of the situation led me to grab the shot from low down and 50 yards back from the crossing thereby losing sight of the rather incongruous solar panels.

First running trials of ex-GWR modified hall class, 6960, Raveningham Hall on the West Somerset Railway involved running inside the Williton station limits inbetween service trains yesterday. Finally after the last of the service trains had cleared the line, she was allowed out onto the line proper. Here she is passing the popular with photographers Castle Hill location. Ray Waldron, the Williton works manager in orange overalls is leaning out of the cab checking that all is ok with his baby.

Clearly although the tender is nicely lined out, there is cosmetic work left to be done on the loco itself.

I've spent another day working on Raveningham Hall in the workshop at Williton on the West Somerset Railway. Today's task was filling in the many blemishes in the boiler cladding and sanding the result in anticipation of painting it sometime. Quite therapeutic really. That Tornado was currently on the line came as a surprise to me, and I couldn't resist the temptation to grab a shot of her as she pulled out of Williton with the late service to Minehead. The fireman had obviously been a bit too enthusiastic with the shovel as she was blowing off even as she pulled into the station. She'll doubtless have sailed up Washford bank shortly after this though. Skulking over on the right of the shot are a pair of diesel hydraulics, Warship class, 832, Onslought and Hymek 7017. Both are lying in wait for the mixed traffic gala this coming weekend.

The shot is a bit ordinary, but this was taken in very gloomy, post-sunset conditions. To just about get enough shutter speed to freeze the action I had to resort to ISO 6400 & F2.8. OK, she wasn't moving very fast because of a preceding service however just a few years ago, this shot would have been impossible to pull off. The location is something of a nostalgic one, the young *Firefox grew up very nearby this spot and spent many a happy day watching the trains trundle by.

I've been AWOL this last week..... seduced away to spend a week aboard a narrow boat on the Llangollen canal. Jolly good it was too. The boat (called Nina) had been hired from Chirk Marina soon before this shot was taken and here we are headed off towards the long dark void of Chirk Tunnel (459 yards). Note that my gallant crew has already provided me with a cup of tea and home made chocolate brownies.

A couple of weeks ago, I went on a photo-charter on the Bodmin & Wenford Railway. Ex GWR 5700 class pannier tank 4612 is near the end of her 10 year boiler certificate and has been repainted in BR black and temporarily given the number of long since scrapped classmate 4666 which was a regular visitor to the line. Almost all of the charter workings on this day were using the china clay hoods which are so appropriate to the area. I was delighted to find that my visit coincided with the bluebells (and other flowers unidentifiable by me) proliferating along sections of the line.
